My grades this year have been like f(x) = 10sinx + 90 - that is, they vacillate in the 80-100 range due to an existential depression coupled with the knowledge that what I think education ought to be is not what education actually is. Anyways, if my grades looked like this:
100
80
100
82
96
91
88
Which averages out to something above a 90, then what is my GPA? At my school, 90+ is an A. So because my average is above a 90, is my GPA a 4.0? Or is it calculated class by class?

Sorry, but it’s not 4.0. You would need 90+'s in all classes to have a 4.0, which is not possible if you have even one B.

Generally, schools score classes like.

100 = 4.0
80 = 3.0
100 = 4.0
82 = 4.0
96 = 4.0
91 = 4.0
88 = 3.7

Classes that you have an A in are generally valued at 4.0, but that will depend on if the class is weighted or not, or if you’re school has some funky grading scale (I’ve seen schools where a 97+ is a 4.3)

B’s are a bit tricky.
My school is not this way, but I’m pretty sure the B scale is divided into 3 sections.
80-83 = 3.0
84-86 = 3.3
87-89 = 3.7
But this all really depends on your school.

Since you have 4 A’s and 3 B’s, your GPA for inidividual classes will be added up, and divided by the total number of classes you’re taking.

If I were to guess at your current GPA, which can only be determined if I know the exact grading scale your school uses, you would have a…
(4+4+4+4+3.7+3+3)/7 = ~3.67

Every school is different and the only way to find out for sure is to ask your counselor. But most likely, if you have below a 90 average at the end of a semester in any class, you do not have an unweighted 4.0.

At my school, each letter grade is assigned a number value. An A is a 4.0, a B is a 3.0, a C is a 2.0 and so on, it doesn’t matter how high or low of an A: it’s still a 4.0. More competitive schools will convert your numerical average by dividing it into a 4.0 scale, calculating it to the tenths, hundredths, or even thousandths place. Like I said, each school is different.

My school has a VERY complicated way of calculating GPA.
Honestly, I like it. The only downside is that it seems a bit inflated compared to some of the valedictorians on here saying they have 4.3ish.

In our school, ranks 2 through 9 have a GPA of about 4.8 to 4.5, our val has a GPA of 5.25ish. Good thing he’s moving schools. :)

My school just does the regular average out of 100. It’s an average of your class grades. Honors and AP classes get 7 extra points. IMO, its simpler and easier to understand. Idk how it converts to the other system though.
