How does replacing Fs with As affect my transfer?

<p>Hi friends, I am currently a cc student in cali, not resident. I was doing horrible in the last few terms, not actually really horrible; I didn't show up for some finals just because I wasn't gotta get an A, so I decided to get a F then retake it. I am planning on transfer to UCs, just wondering how these Fs will affect me from transferring(I knew they won't count for GPA, but it will show on the transcript ). Please help!!!!!</p>

<p>BTW, I am doing mechanical engineering major! </p>

<p>If you get A’s in classes that you initially got F’s in, only the A’s will be counted for the purposes of GPA calculation, if I recall correctly.</p>

<p>Don’t forget to use your academic renewal option for those F’s. There is a “renewal with re-take” option, so use that one since you took the classes over. This wipes the F from your record (sorta). You need to visit your CC counselor to get the ball rolling on that; it’s a process.</p>

<p>You don’t need AR if it is the same course at the same school or within the same district. You just need to file a repeated course form. The change happens really quickly, like within a couple of weeks usually. But you need to file a form. Go ask CC admissions. Plus, if it is the same course in the UC drop down, it will be indicated as a repeat and they will adjust the GPA, although they will later need the actual transcript verification.</p>

<p>AR is primarily to get rid of bad grades from another school and can take 1-2 years to process.</p>

<p>My AR processed in 2 weeks, not 2 years. AR with repeat is easy and recommended when you have an F, even when you retake. Go talk to a counselor, as forums are full of varied opinions. The only opinion that matters is the counselor who knows your school’s logistics when it comes to transfer.</p>

<p>Point taken. Maybe they call it something diff where you are. At the CCs here they are two different forms. But AR is not necessarily the preferred way so let’s not get wrong info out. I’ve seen ppl get screwed time-wise filing the wrong form. </p>

<p>Here’s a link from UC regarding transfers and repeating. It says each CC is different, so yeah just make sure you get the right form, whichever it is. (It’s nearer the bottom.)</p>

<p>Yeah, i knew about the Fs will count for GPA, but they still showed on the transcript which I am concerning about.</p>

<p>Thanks fullload. But does “renewal with re-take” means I can wipe out those Fs? It’s different from AR, right?</p>

<p>do whatever process your school has. It may be the one fulload says or may be a simple repeat. The UCs do not care if they see an F. AR obviously tells them there was a D or an F, so it’s essentially irrelevant. Every preso by the UCs I have seen for counselors shows the F clearly on the transcript with the repeated grade. </p>

<p>If they offer AR with repeat and it’s a fast process, it will not show the F, I assume, since standard AR shows “AR”. Either way, you need to get this sorted with your CC. </p>

<p>The AR replaces the F and does not count toward your GPA, essentially wiping it from your transcript. Simply retaking without the AR option leaves the F, and also the new grade. Why leave an F on your transcripts when you don’t have to?</p>

<p>Just keep in mind every CC is different. As someone who has now attended 6 different CC’s I can say with certainty, none of them are on the same page in California. Go see a counselor to determine if AR is right for you and if you are even eligible.</p>

<p>I received 3 F’s and 1 D in community college, retook them and earned 3 B’s and 1 A, and UCLA still accepted my slacker ass.</p>

<p>TLDR: You can fail 4 classes and still get into UCLA. I’m proof of that.</p>

<p>Hey guys, what if I got an F or D this Fall and plan to retake during Winter Quarter for a B or passing. Will I be rejected? or will they wait to see my winter quarter grades to see if I passed or got a good grade?</p>

I got 3 F’s and 2 D’s at my cc, retook for 3 A’s and 1 B and didn’t even replace the other one and got in cal and ucla.

i never knew you could do this - i got a D last year and then retook the class and got a B. can i do academic renewal? will i still have to report the D when reporting grades to UC?

Report the D for sure, but it won’t be factored into GPA.

Doesn’t matter too much. I wouldn’t get anymore though.

I had something like 6 F’s on my transcripts, and I just finished my first quarter at UCLA. It’s possible to get in despite a few F’s.

Hey everyone,

I have a question in regards to grades as well.

Here’s my situation:
I have submitted a TAG to UCD. I got approved to transfer in fall of 2017. I am currently failing biology. I am planning to retake it during the spring. However, I will be violating the whole C and above criteria. In my transfer planner I stated that I was going to take the second part of biology during the spring semester. However, that won’t be happening since I’m retaking Biology part 1 during the spring semester. My GPA will be above 3.2 by the time spring semester comes along as well.

Will my TAG get rescinded?

@Oldhopeful I doubt anybody with 6 F’s did ever gratuate from high school…let alone admitted to UCLA!

@uclaparent9 Well, I did graduate from high school, I did receive six F’s at community college, and I was admitted into UCLA. I’m not sure why you’re having trouble with my statement.

Although, you’re not far from the truth. I barely graduated high school. I don’t think I even had a GPA of 1 after my first three semesters at community college. I stepped away for a period. When I returned to community college I was more disciplined. I fixed most of my previous errors and raised my GPA to a 3.78. Had I been able to fix every poor grade from before I could have probably had a 3.95.

My situation is not a common scenario, but I am proof that the unlikely is possible.
