How does rooming work?

I've been looking at the ResLife Calendar for the Class of 2016 (because we haven't gotten ours yet) and I'm quite confused. Does anybody from the Class of 2016 mind telling me what they went through last year?

I’m curious, too. How much roommate “matching” is there? How soon do you get to communicate with your assigned roommate?

I’m a current second year at Wesleyan. All freshman are matched with their roommates, and you are assigned your roommate in late June.

Wes takes a relatively “hands off” view to matching. They say they have tried matching roomates on personality traits in the past, but found through experience its fairly impossible and they have fewer complaints when they just randomly match. So they only ask you a handful of roomate matching questions, like, “do you smoke” (of course smoking is not allowed in the dorms but they are sensitive that many or even most nonsmokers object to the smell on clothes, etc.) If I remember correctly (and I might not), they send you the forms in June and your dorm and roomate assignment about a month later. When you get the assignment they will give you your roomate’s email contact.
