How does UCD rank? Is this ranking really accurate?

hi, I’m in the process of deciding where to go to this Fall 2006 and I found a ranking of the public schools. it kinda threw me off when I saw how high UCI and UCSB ranked. however, a lot of ppl tell me that UCD ranks higher than those two. can someone please help me confirm this? i mean campus wise i prefer the other two over UCD but i’m not sure about which one is better academic wise. thanks.

haha

davis without a doubt should have a higher ranking than irvine and santa barbara.

UC Davis officials misreported the amount of faculty that had Ph.D's, which lowered our ranking.

From The California Aggie (UC Davis's Newspaper):
<a href="http://media.www.californiaaggie.com/media/paper981/news/2005/11/18/FrontPage/Officials.Incorrect.Ranking.Will.Not.Affect.Graduate.Professional.School.Admissi-1321788.shtml?sourcedomain=www.californiaaggie.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com%5B/url%5D">http://media.www.californiaaggie.com/media/paper981/news/2005/11/18/FrontPage/Officials.Incorrect.Ranking.Will.Not.Affect.Graduate.Professional.School.Admissi-1321788.shtml?sourcedomain=www.californiaaggie.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com</a></p>

oh man! how could they be so careless like that. how does it really stand then?

ya really... they should be obsessing over the rankings like you do.

o.O duh. of course. why would they be so selective then? that's why they don't want just anyone to go there to ruin their reputation. all schools will take pride in their ranking.

Prophasi or anyone else who cares to comment:

How much higher would UC Davis be ranked if it had been reported correctly? I mean UCI's overall score is a 64 (US News), UCSB has a 60 and UC Davis has a 59.

Would the correct data (plus the fact that UCD is just now moving to D1 athletics: generate a ton of money for sports, research, campus expansion, etc.) put UCD ahead of UCI and UCSB "officially?"

US News Ranks UCI as 40, UCD as 42 and UCSB as 45... that's of 2006 of course. UCI is already DI sports, has a huge medical school expansion in the works and has a highly respected School of Biological Sciences. UCSB is also highly respected for their research in the sciences, especially physics. UCD is definitely expanding, and getting more known for research.

batman...I think for 2007 Davis is definitely going to be ahead of SB and I. Honestly, in the next 2-5 years I see it creeping up on SD. As much as everyone tries to downplay the importance of sports, it really boosts the image of a school. I mean, we had a ton of alumni in Palo Alto to rally the Aggies against Stanford. These alumni are getting back the school spirit. What comes along with school spirit? Wanting to give donations to the school!

Our private donations went up for the 3rd straight year and reached the second highest total ever.
<a href="http://media.www.californiaaggie.com/media/paper981/news/2005/09/08/FrontPage/Private.Donations.To.University.Increase.For.Third.Consecutive.Year-1321109.shtml?sourcedomain=www.californiaaggie.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com%5B/url%5D">http://media.www.californiaaggie.com/media/paper981/news/2005/09/08/FrontPage/Private.Donations.To.University.Increase.For.Third.Consecutive.Year-1321109.shtml?sourcedomain=www.californiaaggie.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com</a></p>

Add to that the fact that that was published BEFORE all of the big things that went on this year (i.e. Stanford games).

In terms of the U.S. News Rankings, private donations are a big part of their criteria.

Other sources, such as the Washington Monthly,
<a href="http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2005/0509.collegeguide.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2005/0509.collegeguide.html</a>
have UC Davis at higher rankings such as 17th, above such places as USC, U of Chicago, Duke, Notre Dame, and UNC-Chapel Hill!! And where Irvine and SB are nowhere to be found.

So, to sum up, I believe it was written somewhere that if UCD had reported the correct data, we'd be somewhere around #40, but I think that we have a much better shot at moving up then the other "mid-tier" UCs.

Oh, and UCD also is in the US News Top 50 in graduate Business, Med School, Law School, and Engineering.

if ur college football team or basketball team is good then ur college is good

I would not choose among UCSB, UCI, and UCD based on rankings, since their reputation and selectivity are almost identical.

Good point but imo....

in the middle tier bracket .... it should be this

UCI
UCSB
UCD

now there should be an asterick* on the mid-tier UC rankings, depending on your majors those rankings will change..... in other words, the mid tier reputation and selectivity are almost the same but what you want to major in that school or which mid-tier UC(UCI, UCSB, UCD) offers the best program for your major should easily distinquish the rankings for you.....

UCD is a good for veterinarian school and veterinary medicine.

UCI is good in the medical field because they have a good medical school ranked slightly below UCLA's medical school.

....etc

Yeah, I assumed that UC Davis will be moving up; just looking for others opinions. Moving to Division 1 will create a ton of cash. That is also a great point about private donations. Yup, I'm deciding between UCD (Managerial Economics), UCSB (Business Economics), and UCSD (Economics). UCD, UCI, and UCSB are so close that you shouldn't just pick the "one with the highest ranking." Only problem: I can't make I made decision...great problem to have!

Mrxalleycat, UCD is ALSO good in the medical field, in Medical Research

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/med/brief/mdrrank_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/med/brief/mdrrank_brief.php</a></p>

tied with UCI at 46th.

And in Medical Primary Care

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/med/brief/mdprank_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/med/brief/mdprank_brief.php</a></p>

where we are 17th.

Rankings are subject to change. You really shouldn't make any decision based on some arbitrary numbers.

In fact, different sources will give you different ranks, so I really wouldn't worry too much about it.

Read this article to learn more about what is going on at Davis.

<a href="http://www.davisenterprise.com/articles/2005/08/09/news/2020/2020part3.txt%5B/url%5D">http://www.davisenterprise.com/articles/2005/08/09/news/2020/2020part3.txt</a></p>

ack! i'm racking through my brain and it is so difficult to decide between uci and ucd. i want to pursue in the medical field such as bio or psychology. i keep hearing different things from different people. others say davis has a better medical program and another tells me uci does. this is a really tough decision. i'm down with just two options.

Go to Davis. UCI is a commuter school = dead environment. UCD is a college town = fun place to be.

I think the rankings are interesting ways to group some schools, but until you can plug in (which implies you actually know) your needs, likes and dislikes, they are less reliable for making the final decision. For that you should rely on where you will be able to fit in and succeed the best. It is a gamble...at any school you could pull a roomate who makes your life hell or someone that exposes you to a field of study you never considered but eventually become passionate about.

There are social differences, geographic differences and so you must decide where you will fit in the most comfortably, while being offered the best education.

I will draw criticism for this but even with the most extreme differences in UCs a student could decide to go to the lowest rated school and if they make the right connection and their life is made more comfortable..they could come out ahead of where they might be if they had gone to the top school. Evidence: while we can all recognize that a graduate from UC Berkeley might have a better chance at getting into Harvard Law....it does not mean that every Berkeley graduate who applies will get in; so someone who chose Berkeley for undergraduate might get rejected while another student at UC.I or even Sac State might get accepted.

If I was an applicant choosing between two colleges, I might look at the difficulties students have trying to get into the courses I want to take. One of the reasons so many take five or six years to graduate is because of the difficulty they faced getting into their prerequisite courses freshman and sophmore year. good luck.
