I’m currently a senior in high school and I was initially planning on taking the SAT for a second time last month but I felt hugely underprepared so I ultimately decided to take it later. My school is offering an SAT for seniors on October 10th and I was also planning on signing up to take it on October 6th as well. Would there be any point in taking two SATs that are dated so close together? I’m considering taking it in November to see if an extra month would make a difference instead but I’m terrified of getting my score delayed (again) and not being able to receive them before the application deadline.
I don’t think a second SAT that close to the first will show any improvement.
Will you be able to view and send your score for the in-school SAT via College Board in the same way you can with the exam you register for on your own?
Yeah, it’s pretty much exactly the same as any other SAT.
Every test-taker has a “score range” of 50-70 points (ballpark), so there’s a chance that on one test my might score towards the low end of your range and on another you may score towards the high end. Anything more than that, though, is extremely unlikely, as four days isn’t enough to make any real improvements to your knowledge, skills, or ability.
There’s always the chance that you wake up on the 6th with a headache or stomach virus (of course I hope that doesn’t happen ) and you’ll be glad to have the opportunity to test again right away on the 10th. Prepare as best you can this month and get the test out of the way. You probably won’t spend much time preparing between October 10th and the November test date anyway.
I would check on that test being given by the high school. That means it is a state-imposed test that is used for providing figures under no child left behind laws. You may actually be required to take it absent illness. You should also verify exactly what occurs with that test before assuming you do not need the regular, national SAT. You mention that it is exactly like the regular SAT. Check that carefully becuase many of those state tests exclude the optional writing section, and thus if you need the writing section for schools you are applying to, you may need that second test. Also, though scores are likely to be provided online, for those state tests, that often takes a lot longer to show up after taking the test than the regular SAT tests. Also be aware that as a state imposed test, it is one that cannot be cancelled after you take it (you have until the Wednesday after taking the regular SAT to cancel it)
@drusba did an excellent job of outlining the potential pitfalls of the in-school exam. CT adopted the in-school SAT two years ago, and there was much confusion around the early administration.
Also, in light of the recent problems with the June and August exams, I would want the additional cover of the Saturday exam.
I’m considering just one of the tests for my DS (he took the August SAT). I like that the October 6 test results will be available Oct. 19 where the October 10 test results won’t be available until November 2. (Essay results follow those dates.) I see no problem taking both if you are prepared in advance, and if you aren’t burnt out by taking one 4 days later.
