I am a junior in high school with an average of 3.67 gpa. I am in a community service club and will be getting above 100 hours of work. I still have to take the SAT/ACT, but I hope to get above 1700.

I am not taking any AP classes this year, but next year I'm taking AP Physics and AP Stats.

Will I be able to get in with those projected classes and grades?

^ It's largely a myth that it's difficult to get into the UCs if you're OOS. For the class entering in 2007, UC Santa Barbara's admit rate for OOS (US resident) applicants was 51.2%, just slightly under the school's overall admit rate of 54.4%. They just didn't have very many OOS applicants---only 2,428 out of a total applicant pool of almost 41,000.

It appears with a 1700 SAT and a 3.65 GPA (the way the UCs calculate GPA), you'd have a pretty good chance of being admitted to UC Santa Barbara. In the 2007 entering class, 68.7% of applicants with GPA between 3.6 and 3.79 and SAT scores between 1500 and 1799 were admitted, according to StatFinder.

It's quite simple. UCs (with perhaps the exception of Berkeley and UCLA) are mostly number-based, and since UCSB isn't nearly as selective as Berkeley or LA, anyone from Cali with test scores and GPA above the middle 50% should have a good shot.

okayy you guys… i have a questioon. I’m really scared about college, i mean i really want to get into UCSB and im going to be a senior this year and this is what i have:
GPA: 2.71 SAT: 1700 (but going to take again in october) SAT 2: havent taken them yet going to take them in November7. I have around 200 hours of volunteering. I have 1 full year of tutoring this kid everyday after school. I’ve been a member of Make a wish club all three years. I’m a peer counselor. I’m an actively go to a religious camp every year… if that even counts as an extra cirricular. I was a MSA secretary for a year.
so what chance do you think i have of making it into UCSB? Can the personal essay help me get in even though my GPA is pretty low? What can i improve/do that will make a difference in me getting into UCSB>?? thank you

omgitsUCSB, is that your UC GPA? I’m sorry to say that the minimum required GPA for ALL UCs is a 3.0. Now, sometimes UCR, UCM, and UCSC (now to a lesser extent) accept “exceptions” below that, but even then I’m afraid to say it would be a reach. Your SAT is also below average for UCSB, I believe, or at least it certainly isn’t high enough for them to really reconsider. I’m not trying to be mean, but honestly, I wouldn’t waste your money applying.

However, if UCSB is your dream school, you should definitely look into going to SBCC. SBCC students can live in the private dorms Tropicana Gardens and other places in IV with UCSB students. There’s also programs that GUARANTEE transfer into UCSB if you follow the requirements. If you transfer, you will graduate with a UCSB diploma which is no different from a UCSB student that was there for 4 years. You should definitely look into that, there’s more information here:

Dissonance is right. You’re going to have to go the community college route and transfer. With a TAG agreement, it’s pretty simple and guaranteed as long as you can keep the minimum GPA at community college.

im only a freashman. im out of state. and i have a GPA of 3.47 but theres plenty of time to get that higher. im taking all AP next year. and involved in peer mediation, and peer tutoring, and vlounteer clubs. what chance do i have of making it into santa barbra?

I wouldn’t even use anything later than the previous year for an attempt at a chance for these UCs. Stats have increased too dramatically to use 2007 or 2008, and above post is correct. Its pretty hard now compared to a few years back

The thing that you want to look at it is: “How do your grades and SAT scores compare with the other students in your high school who apply to UCSB?” You will be compared to the other kids in your school. So, you may have a 3.8, but if the average GPA of students who apply from your school is 4.1, then you may have a problem. However, sadly you need a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the UCs.

My son was admitted from the waitlist with an SAT score of 1950, ACT of 29, 8 AP classes and a GPA of 3.9 and lots of ECs. 135 kids applied from his HS (35 were accepted) and the average accepted GPA was 4.1. When he got to orientation, he found that kids from other schools had a GPA of 3.5 and had taken only 1 AP class.

Your GPA will be calculated for admission from the A-G classes that you took in your Sophmore and Junior years. They will take your weighted GPA from these 2 years in those classes. The 2 “Cs” may hurt you.

I would definitely attend SBCC and get into the tag program with UCSB.

I had a 1960 SAT, 700 Math II 670 US History and 560 Spanish, a 3.95 UC GPA and some extra curriculars and i got into UCSB, but I still believe everyone’s case is different. Good luck and best wishes :P
