Several years ago, I took some classes only as a hobby, I was hoping to go into art shool so I took some art classes but then I wasn't so considered with grades.

Because I don't have to work so much anymore I decided to give it a shot to a UC(Preferably UCLA) or USC

I have several C's and I have some make up to do by acing 90% of classes that I will be taking.

Does anyone have any idea that if I didn't do so good from elective classes like art and humanities but then do really well in upcoming classes will I have a shot at UCLA?

I took 2 history, 1 psych and several art classes. thats about it. Will I have a shot with "upward" trend with about overall 3.4 to 3.5 GPA? by the time I finish? I had to work full time or even 2 jobs to contribute financially to my family so I have a good topic for writing essays.

I'm thinking political science or phiolosophy.

UCLA - poltical science or phiolsophy. Seems like only shot I have for UCLA. I’m into poltics, phiolosophy, economics, business but I don’t think i’d be good enough for business or econ for USC(which i heard is way better business school)

For impacted majors, major GPA is very important and will be looked at with scrutiny. Although you should still make sure your overall GPA is within competitive range.

well is 3.4 or 3.5 not competitive enough for USC or UCLA? :(

In short, I wouldn’t say a 3.4 or 3.5 is competitive. Even for philosophy, the avg admitted GPA at UCLA was 3.61. For political science it was 3.77. That being said, you won’t know what will happen until you try.

@brick0319 - That being said, if you have that 3.4 or 3.5 GPA + you are a returning student + you have a compelling personal statement (8.5/10) you would be considered a 50:50 applicant for UCLA.

But if any of that deteriorates, like you wrote a 6/10 Personal Statement your chances go down, significantly. To about 35/65 if you have a 3.5 and so on.

So hope for the best but have a backup or two in your pocket!

I wish you the best of luck

If I ace all if not most of the major subjects do I have a chance? What’s more important? overall GPA or major subject GPA?

Overall GPA is what will get your application looked at (you said you have a 3.4 or 3.5, that should be good enough), the major GPA and what you got in your major subjects will ultimately decide whether you get in. So yes, if you ace all your major subjects it will help tremendously.
