Major GPA- does it matter?

Do UCs reject students with low major GPA?
For example, your transferable GPA is around 3.8
However, your major GPA is around 3.4

Do UCs look at major GPA separately?
Thank you very much!

@laccstudent When I spoke with reps from UCLA and UCR last November, they both said that major GPA was especially important for impacted/ popular majors, such as business economics at UCLA and business admin at UCR. Oh, and the rep from UCLA just said to keep your GPA high in general, but she didn’t really get more specific than that. I’m not sure about other UC campuses.

What @AveryJessup said is right. Also, it matters a lot for engineering and computer science applicants.

Thank you. What about non-impacted majors? Like BA in Anthropology (at UCLA). Average admitted GPA in 2014 (2015 is 25th/75th percentile) was around 3.5.

Logically speaking, an ideal major GPA would be at least .1 higher than the average admitted GPA recorded by the UC. Major coursework should theoretically be the coursework that students devote the most time to and perform the best in. For example, a 3.7 is a solid GPA for most majors, but a 3.7 cumulative GPA with a 3.02 major GPA might raise some questions.

This is a dumb question: what classes do we count when calculating our major GPA? For instance, i’m a Sociology major. I would obviously include the Sociology classes I’m taking/have taken, but would those be the only classes I count or do I also include statistics and the philosophy class that is a major prereq for my major to get into UCD?

@boxandwhiskers I’ve assumed major GPA is determined by the major preparatory classes listed on assist as those would most likely be the ones to transfer over credit wise.

@boxandwhiskers I’d assume everything on UCLA’s assist along with all other sociology classes you’ve taken. I don’t know if UCD considers major GPA.
