How high do SAT scores need to be for University of Maryland?

As a high school junior I scored 750 on the reading, 710 on the math and 660 on the writing portions of the SAT (2120 total). I'm wondering if I should retake the SATs as a senior or just stay with my current scores. I know I could score higher on the writing portion - I got a crappy question the first time around, but I don't want to chance having lower scores in the other categories. The College Board statistics show I would have a 70 chance of dropping from my current scores.

I'm primarily interested in the honors programs at the University of Maryland at College Park or UMBC (Baltimore County), and want to focus on medicine or law as a career. I have a 3.67 unweighted GPA.

What would you recommend as a testing strategy?

your in, in a heartbeat. No need to retake the SAT. (maybe for the honors program).

yeah! you're probably in! Now write that app realllllllly well!

According to US News site, avg admitted GPA for UMd College Park last year was 3.8 with avg combined verbal + math SAT = 1150 – 1370.

For UMd Baltimore Co, avg GPA 3.5, avg verbal + math SAT 1120 - 1320.

It seems that you also have an extremel good chance of UMCP's Homors program because the middle 50% for that is something like 1360-1460.

If not that, then the Scholar's Program, which has a middle 50% of 1280-1420

I think those are the numbers. If not, then they're pretty close

Your replies were a lot of help. I'll contact their admissions offices. I'm still unsure about the differences between the two schools honors and scholars program. UMPC's open house did not really differentiate between the two.

The admissions office recomended taking the SATs again, saying there was no downside to retaking the test. UMD looks at the highest overall scores without any penalty if most recent scores fall. They said that scholarship opportunites are increased with higher scores - so why not retake? I think I will.

Thanks for all the comments.

Not only are you in,but you will get into the honors program.

DS had a combined SAT of 1320 for the fall class of 2003. He did NOT get accepted at University of Maryland. He was waitlisted initially (in an early round...he wasn't applying EA or priority, but apparently he got his "stuff" into them by that deadline) and subsequently rejected. Since he didn't really want to go there, we never asked why. He had all honors and AP courses his junior and senior years. It was odd. He is going to Boston University. Go figure.

My sister got waitlisted with around 1200 at College Park.

iwin611...also check out St. Mary's College of MAryland...the honors college of the U MD system. it was my safety school but I felt i could have gone there if push came to shove. I really loved it and the people i met. It is WAY down at the end of the MD western shore (in St. Marys City) ...but really only 2 or 3 hours from DC. I think the sciences are strong thee and they have a new lab building. and the smaller community means youll get more faculty attention and more guidance for targeting and getting into med school.
I wouldnt retake the tests..but talk to your guidance counselor. ....just write dynamite application essays...they are the real showcase of your writing. Nobody writes very well on a 25 min. deadline...(except maybe newspaper reporters!)
