How important are internships?

Hello, all. I am a first-year student at De Anza College. I plan to transfer to UCB in 2 years as a major in Arts & Humanities. I might be changing it to a Social Sciences major though. I applied to a NASA internship and went through interviews, and I am pretty sure I got the position(s). I will have a pretty rigorous courseload, and I don't know if I can manage this internship. It will require me to work 4 hours a day in Winter, Spring, Fall, and 8 hours in Summer. I am taking 4 or 5 courses next quarter, including Calculus. The internship requires me to take a separate course as well. The pay is $12/hour, which is pretty good.

Should I take the internship or should I focus on my GPA? How important is it in the admission process? Getting a 4.0 will not guarantee me admission. Please give me advice! Thank you.

I'm wondering what you'll be doing at NASA as a Japanese major?

I think they are pretty important. I interned during the school year last year and this year - it's a bit challenging but it's a rewarding experience.
