How long did it take you to receive your Non Filing Letter?

I sent off the request for mine a little over 3 weeks ago and it’s still not here. It’s the last thing that i need to send to my school, so it’s a little frustrating waiting for it. Does it normally take this long? I’ve never filed before btw and I was unemployed in 2015.

I think 10-14 days is more common. It can depend on the holiday schedule (requests on Dec 20 could take a lot longer since employee could be on vacation), weather in the area, your mail service, etc.

I’d follow up on it at 3 weeks.

You could try to access the IRS online forms site to get the NFL in PDF format. It took me about four days to get the site to work correctly and I was so frustrated I even sent in a request form to the IRS yesterday. I don’t know if links are allowed here, but just google IRS online forms and register for access. It’s free but for some strange reason they require you to have a credit card (not a debit) to verify your identity.

Your local IRS office should be able to give you this document. Take ID.

You don’t need to register to have access to online IRS forms, and you certainly don’t have to provide credit card information for the access. It sounds like you may have stumbled across a non-IRS website that is scamming people into providing sensitive personal information for something that everyone has easy and free access to.

Here’s a link to the IRS form that can be used to request, by mail or fax, a tax transcript or a verification of nonfiling letter:

No, I had to do the credit card thing too. I think it was $1 that was charged and then backed off. It is a way to check the identity and prevent bad people from ordering tax documents of other people.

I said that you don’t have to register or provide credit card information to have access to online IRS forms.

@tylerbk99: My D experienced what you are going through. First, it was sent via snail mail, and then after 2 weeks of no response, she faxed the form, and then it took another two weeks before she received at least 5-6 copies of the letter.

I’m not sure if you are able to obtain a “same-day” copy from your local IRS office. Call first. If not, then I suggest you fax a copy to your regional IRS office; see page 2 of the form:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf

Please note that we are in the height of the tax season…it may take at least a week to get the letter via mail.

Good luck!

Should I be worried? I mailed it off about 23 days ago and I checked the mailbox today and nothing. What should I do? Is there a number to call? Or does it normally take this long? I have never filed taxes before and I was unemployed all throughout 2015 by the way.

It is a real IRS govt site that asks for the CC to prove identity. You don’t HAVE to do it online, you can do it other ways, but the online way does require the credit card for identity check. It’s not a scam. It may be faster than either requesting it by sending in the form or making an appointment and going to the IRS office.

There is some serious miscommunication here. To be clear, I am saying that there is no IRS requirement to register or provide credit card information to access, view and download IRS forms. It sounded to me like that’s what RedLari said needed to be done in order to have access to the IRS form that is used to request a tax transcript or letter verifying nonfiling. Any website that requires registration or credit card information before providing access to IRS forms is a scam. Period. I’m not talking about access to any kind of online application or process that directly sends a request to the IRS for a tax transcript or nonfiling letter.

Okay, but it is an irs.gov page, and I did it and there was $1 charged and then refunded to my credit card, and about a week later I got the transcript in the mail.

Fine, but in the process you describe here you weren’t registering or paying for access to online IRS forms and publications. Here’s what RedLari said:

You don’t have to register to get access to IRS online forms, and you don’t need a credit card to verify your identity to get access to IRS online forms.

you can go to your local IRS office to ask for one.
It was quite a challenge for us, but that’s for another discussion. LOL

“You don’t have to register to get access to IRS online forms, and you don’t need a credit card to verify your identity to get access to IRS online forms”

This is the link my school gave me. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

@BelknapPoint I never paid for my NFL transcript. The credit card I used is not even a visa or master card, but a card I use to pay for medical prescriptions and trips to the vet for my cat (it’s called a Care Card). The IRS requires eight digits of a credit card to prove your identity when you register online. I registered for an account with the IRS and I got a PDF copy of my NFL.

Click on “get transcript online” and you go through a series of steps to register. Good luck OP.
