How long does it take CB to send SAT scores

I've tried searching this on Collegeboard and here but get a zillion non pertinent posts and I know parents know this. If you did not request collegeboard to send scores at the time the test was taken and do so now, how long does it take for the college to receive them?

Does this help?

SAT Scores - View SAT Scores - Send Score Reports

Additional scores require 4 weeks unless you pay the rush fee; College Board would then process it within 2 business days from date of request.

The table you linked only gives the date scores are sent if you requested them at the time you booked your test...I wanted to know how long it took for scores you request after you get the results...you mention 4 weeks..wow that is long. Thanks

Last year when S had his scores sent, the order confirmation from CB said 1-2 weeks. All schools received them in about 1 week. When you select the colleges online, CB will give you an estimated delivery time frame and tell you how the school will receive them (internet or mail).

natmicstef - If you scroll down on the same page of the link I gave, you will see a section "Send SAT Scores" and that's where they have the "approximately 4 weeks" for additional scores. In my son's case, some colleges received it after 2 weeks from the time he ordered the additional scores.

Most colleges suggest not rushing the scores. They say they get them at the same time anyway.

Many thanks mountains and everyone. So it could be anywhere between 1 and 4 weeks and I know now what to rush and what not.

When you are filling out the online request for the scores to be sent, the CB site will immediately tell you when your scores will be sent to each individual school (sometimes it will be different depending on if the school receives them electronically or via mail). At this point you still have time to change or cancel your request as it is before the order is complete and you enter payment info. You can check how long it takes for individual schools without actually completing the request. In general, CB says schools that receive scores electronically take 1-2 weeks, mail 2-4 weeks. I just checked my S's file from last year and most electronic deliveries took less than 1 week. The 4 weeks is for the 4 free and any additional score reports ordered when you take a new test.

Never rush scores without first calling the school as some schools' systems are not equipped to accept rushed scores.

Be careful about rush and no rush. Many colleges actually say they do not take rushed scores so check yours first. What actually happens with those (and others) these days is that whether you do regular order or do rush order, scores get sent the same time via email and it is usually much faster than 4 weeks.

I don't understand the logic behind a college not accepting rush scores - they get the same thing, just faster, right?

I know I've waited too long...is there still time to send SAT scores without the rush fee, for a Jan 1 DL?

I have been looking for the answer to this question myself. I’m confused, however, where other posters are saying that CB tells you when/how each college receives your scores. Where is that written? It does not appear on my email from CB…or anywhere else I’ve looked.

Also, I’ve selected to send “all scores” to my colleges. I’m still taking a December subject test…and it only shows online that my scores are being sent after the December date, not under my other test dates. If I want all of my test dates to be sent to my schools, do I need to register for each date to be sent to my schools separately? I realize this may be a dumb question, but my email from CB says that I have ordered all of my scores to be sent to all of my schools (as I want) but my SAT Scores page on CB says otherwise…Does anyone know what this means?

I’m afraid of all this confusion because I have many Nov.1 deadlines, luckily, all of them take the self-reported scores.

My Oct. SAT score comes out on the 28th, but my EA school’s deadline is Nov. 1st. Should I rush the scores?

And how do you even rush the scores? I do not see that as an option anywhere!

I would like to know this as well. We can’t seem to make an additional order for the regular SAT scores while we are waiting for the Oct. 28 results. How long does a “rush” take?

When S was applying EA last year (with an 11/1 deadline) he sent Oct. scores without putting a “rush” on it. They were sent the right around the same day that they were released (may have even been same day) to the school. I think they were sent around 10/27 or 28. There was no problem with the school receiving them on time, and he did get in EA. However, check with the school’s website info. I’m assuming it says that for EA, results from the Oct. test are OK.
Good luck!

Thank you my2sunz! Your post has made me feel better, (and now I see where you can rush scores) but did your son sign up to have the scores sent before he took the SAT in Oct, or after?

plaidskirt and all recent posters, here are a few concepts about score reporting:

Today is the last day to order your four free score reports from any October SAT I or II! If you need to send those scores to more than four schools, you will be given the option to add more score reports to your order for a fee.

Any time you order a score report related to a test registration–let’s say you order by today for the October test–by default, the College Board sends not only your October test scores, but also all prior test scores.

If you have never ordered score reports before, but are now preparing your four free score reports related to a November test or a December test, then no score reports will go out until you take that test and scores are released. But at that time, by default, the College Board will send not only your Nov or Dec test scores, but also all prior test scores. You can also add additional colleges to receive those scores for a fee.

IMPORTANT: How to manipulate which scores are sent – Know that you do not actually place your order until the final screen. You will know it when the order is placed! So, while you are working up your score report order, don’t worry about having made irrevocable choices…you can manipulate which scores are sent, within limits. For SAT I, look at each college you have selected. By default, you will see that the system is prepared to send ALL scores from all SAT sittings you have completed or are registered for. To the right, you can click a button to learn about that college’s Score Choice position. The first time you investigate, I think you have to work through an info screen. Keep going. You will get to a screen that says this school requires ALL scores or this school allows you to exercise Score Choice and submit only your score from your single best sitting. (You cannot pick and choose sections, e.g., best math, best CR, etc.) For SAT II subject tests, you must send all test scores taken on the same day. So if you took three on one test date and wish you could hold back one lower score, you can’t do that. But if you repeated a subject test over two sittings, you can send the higher score and not send the lower score–as long as you aren’t messing yourself up on reporting scores of other tests taken on either the higher or lower date.

When you finish working up your order, the next screen (I think, somewhere in the process), will tell you how each college receives scores, whether electronically or by mail. A time estimate will be given. Please be aware that electronic transmissions are made by batch delivery to the colleges who subscribe to that service once a week. So it is really not a good use of your money to order rush scores for electronic reporting schools except in the rare circumstance–I might do it if the school was one of the rare schools that goes by the “receipt” rule vs. the “postmark” rule, in other words, they require all application materials to actually be in their office by the deadline vs. they accept all application materials timely ordered/mailed by the deadline.

For EARLY deadlines - The key to deciding whether you need to worry about rush orders is what does the particular college in question say they will accept? Every college website I have ever looked at expressly spells out on their website in the ED/EA which test dates they will accept. Many schools with a Nov. 1 early deadline will accept Nov. tests (it would be rare to accept a Dec. test if they’ve promised a mid-Dec. response to your early application). Those Nov. 1 schools that state they will accept Nov. tests also usually tell you NOT to order rush reporting of scores. As long as you have ordered a score report to be sent to that school in connection with your registration for that test, you should be fine.

Self-reporting of scores - I don’t think it is common that schools will accept self-reported scores. Most want the official report! (The only exception to this is AP scores–that is an entirely different subject. You generally don’t send AP score reports until after admission for the purpose of credit or advanced placement.)

Hope this helps more than muddies! But instead of relying on my version, your two absolute best sources for figuring this out are (1) the college websites (and call Admissions if you need clarification), and (2) the College Board score reporting website–as I said, you can walk through many steps and learn all of this while your score report “order” is in process; finally, at the end, you will hit a button to confirm your order. It will appear on screen, in your account and via confirmation email. You can even go back in and make changes to that order…at least as to the four free ones up to the free deadline, which is today for Oct. tests!..not so sure about changing the paid orders, hopefully, you won’t need to figure that out!

plaidskirtkid, from what you describe, I think you have placed an order for score reports related to your Dec. test, which means no schools will get any score reports from you until after the Dec. test results. If I have accurately described your current status, I think you need to be sure of your confidence in self-reporting and how your early app Nov. 1 schools will treat this scenario. I am not so sure you are well set for those apps. Good luck!

thank you so much TXArtemis! I woke up early this morning thinking that all of my scores will be sent after the December test (bad) and it’s not worth the risk, so I’ve ordered all of my scores to be sent once my October test is released. Thanks for your help, I’m glad I got this figured out at the last chance possible!

TXArtemis i love you :)
