How many Cal States should i apply to?

Im applying to 4 Cal States, which are CSU Los Angeles, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton, and CSU San Bernardino. Im also applying to UC Irvine. Is this fine, or should i do more?

that seems fine, though you could add 2 more or so if you want more options.i recommend that you also consider applying to ucsc & ucr

Based on your other posts, you plan to do Pre-Nursing/Nursing. Since Nursing is very competitive and impacted at all the CSU’s, so I would add a few more schools to your list. I would include possibly San Marcos and/or Channel Islands. Not sure if you plan to commute to keep costs low, but Azusa Pacific University might also be an option due to their accelerated or direct admit program. You could some FA since you have good stats that it may make it worth an application to APU.

You could always use your local community college as a safety.

When applying to Cal States and UC Irvine, would i need to apply for pre-nursing or nursing at the same time or just apply to the colleges as a general thing?

If you are applying to CSU Fullerton direct entry:
You must complete a CSUmentor applicationOpens in new window during the fall semester of your senior year.
Select the Direct-Entry Freshmen option as the major.
The application period is October 1 - November 30.
You will not need to apply to the School of Nursing separately.

If you are not admitted into the direct entry Nursing program, you can still be admitted to CSUF and take the nursing pre-req’s and reapply when these are finished.

Applying for UCI direct entry:
All Freshman applicants must complete the standard UC Irvine General Application and the Nursing Science Supplemental Application by November 30 to be eligible for the following fall entry. These applications are both online and are available through the UC Irvine Admissions website beginning October 1. Once you have completed the UC Irvine General Application online, you will be directed to the Nursing Science Supplemental Application. Applications must be submitted online through the UC Irvine Admission webpage.

is possible for students to be admitted to UCI, but not the Nursing Science major; if this happens, admission will default to the applicant’s second choice major. Students not admitted to the program may reapply to change their major after their 2nd year at UCI, or students may also choose to reapply to our program as Transfer/2nd Baccalaureate students.

For the rest of the Cal States, you would apply as a Pre-Nursing major and/or Undeclared with an Interest in Nursing depending upon the campus using the CSU Mentor application.

Im confused on when you talk about the Nursing Science major. I understand that to be a nurse, you do not need to major in anything, you either get your ADN and BSN and then take the NCLEX-RN to get your RN license. Applying as a Nursing Science major to UCI, or any college/university in general that admits direct entry for Nursing, means that you will get either your ADN or BSN, right?

UCI is a 4 year university, so you will get a BSN. You can get an ADN at a community college and work as an RN if you pass the NCLEX but you will have fewer job opportunities. You can apply to BSN program after you get your ADN if you are unable to get into a direct admit program as a Freshman or do the Pre-Nursing program at any UC/CSU of private univerity and then reapply to some Nursing programs to get your BSN.

Since i am a senior applying to university, if i apply to one with a direct admit nursing program as an undergrad freshman, i put Nursing Science major so i can get my BSN? and then take the NCLEX-RN, of course

Correct. Apply to UCI using the UC application indicating Nursing Science. You then submit a Supplemental Nursing application for the direct admit program. Also make sure you pick an alternate major for all the schools in case you are not accepted into the Nursing major.

For non-direct admit programs, apply as Pre-Nursing/Undeclared-Nursing and again select an alternate major if not accepted into the Pre-Nursing major.

Not sure if you seen this information for CSULA/CSUSB and CSULB for Nursing:

For CSULA:
Nursing is impacted at the following two levels: for high school students applying to CSULA as freshmen and for upper division students (including transfers) who are applying to the nursing major.
• Freshmen - Incoming freshmen wishing to major in Nursing will be admitted as an “Undeclared with an Interest in Nursing” if they meet all of the following criteria:
o Minimum Cumulative 3.0 High School GPA
o SAT combined math and critical reading score of ≥ 900 or ACT composite score of >20
o Campus Impaction Admission Criteria
• Upper Division Students Including Transfers – All upper division students applying to the major must achieve a minimum cumulative 2.75* GPA and a 2.75 GPA in all prerequisite courses. The number of applicants who can be admitted to the major is limited by space availability. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission of students for available space will be determined by a rank ordering that is based on additional eligibility requirements, which are stipulated on the application form available at: www.calstatela.edu/academic/hhs/nursing/nurs_adm.php]
After all prerequisite courses are completed, a separate School of Nursing (SON) application is due to the SON. Deadlines for applications are posted on the following
website: www.calstatela.edu/academic/hhs/nursing/nurs_adm.php
Students are eligible to apply to the nursing major even if they have declared another major at 45 units.

For CSUSB:

For CSULB:

Pre-Nursing majors must complete the following requirements within four semesters of being admitted as a Pre-Nursing major or declaring a Pre-Nursing major. Some students may need to take courses during Summer Session to meet these requirements. At the end of the four semesters after Declaration of a Pre-Nursing major, students who have not met the requirements must either declare another major or meet with an Academic Advisor to determine if the student’s performance in the courses merits an additional semester to complete.

At the end of the second semester, pre-nursing students must have a grade of “C” or better in general education certified written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and STAT 108 courses as well as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses.

Pre-Nursing students with an ELM score that places them in MAPB 1 or MAPB 7 or MAPB 11 may petition for an additional semester.

At the end of the fourth semester, pre-nursing students must have a “C” grade or better in BIOL 201, BIOL 207, BIOL 208, and CHEM 140 as well as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses.

At the end of the fourth semester, Pre-Nursing students must apply to become Nursing majors. Candidates must complete a General Assessment Test and should contact the school to learn how to take the General Assessment Test. In reviewing applications, a personal profile is developed for each applicant based on GPA, in prerequisite courses and the General Assessment Test. The largest weight in the profile is derived from the prerequisite science course GPA, with typical grade point averages for these courses being 3.25 or higher and no grades below a “C.” Candidates with the highest profile scores are selected for admission. It is anticipated that about seventy-two (72) students will be admitted each Fall and Spring semesters from hundreds of applicants.

The thing is that i do not wish to major in nursing, what i want to do is get my BSN and become a regular RN. Not a nurse practitioner, just a regular Nurse.

A regular nurse is a BSN. An associate degree (only 2 years) Nurse is an ADN and not many jobs for ADN’s. An RN is a BSN. A NP-Nurse Practitioner requires even more education than a BSN. You need to get a Master’s Degree for a Nurse practitioner so after you get your BSN, then you go back for your NP.

Lets say i would do a 2+2 program in CSULA. When I’m done with my pre-reqs during my sophomore year in college, I can apply to any Nursing school, right? Like the one in CSULB, CSUSB, UCI, etc…???

Yes. After you finish your Nursing Pre-req classes you can apply to the Nursing school at CSULA and the rest. Like I stated before, you can do your Nursing Pre-req classes at a community and then apply also. Only CSUF and UCI on your list will accept Freshman admits directly into their Nursing program without having to reapply. If you do not get into their Nursing programs directly, you can take the Pre-req classes the first 2 years and reapply again.

and what would happen if i don’t get into the “pre-nursing/undeclared-nursing” at a CSU?

You could be accepted as an Undeclared at the CSU’s or UC’s, take your pre-req’s under a different major and reapply for the Nursing program. Always apply with alternate major just in case.

So, when applying to college, as my major i would put “nursing” , “undeclared with an interest in nursing” , “pre-nursing/undeclared-nursing” , or “Nursing Science”??? Does it depend if its for a Direct Entry in Nursing or 2+2 program in Nursing?? If so, what would i need to put for my major for each of the two programs?

When you apply using the CSU or UC application, you first select the campus and then the appropriate nursing major from the drop down menu. Also select an alternate major as a back up. You do not type in the major. All available majors will be listed on the drop down menu on the on-line application.
