how many natl ap scholars a year?

how many students qualify for national ap scholar every year, and how many of those are juniors

2157 students got the National AP Scholar Award in 2003. (for some reason, 6,152 in 2004)
87 of those were Juniors (or soph or frosh).
Are you vying for it too? For some reason, there seems to be a lot more Juinors looking at the Nat'l AP Scholar Award. (i'm taking 9 tests this year...)
Maybe because now half year courses are also counted as a full course.

Remember that Calculus AB is just a subscore of BC and doesn't count as a separate AP class. I think there are a few more exceptions too. All in all, I think juniors who are Nat'l AP Scholars have a very good shot at HYSP.

what do you need to qualify?

i wonder how many of those 6152 completed their exams as juniors. I'm surprised there are so few. It doesn't strike me as too difficult an undertaking, and i was sure that there had to be tons of neurotic schools up in the northeast that put their students through this whole rigmarole anyway.....Geez.
i am vying for it too....but no half year type courses, i don't think. I go to a fairly crappy public highschool that miraculously happens to offer AP (a relic of it's formerly successful IB program).
it turns out a few ap scholars of distinction with every senior class. It's very rare that anyone qualifies for national scholar. I don't know of any students who have done it. My AP coordinator treated me like an alien when I asked to self-study some exams. But so be it. I'm going for it.
So far i've got
from sophomore year:
french: 5
french lit: 5
euro: 5

this year i'm taking
english: confident that i will get a 5
US hist: likewise
english lit: self-studying, think i'll get a 5
psych: likewise
biology: self-studying, and praying to god.

So i guess that means i'll be ap natl scholar if all goes as planned....i'll take more ap's during senior year too.

if you could post your plans, exams etc, it would be interesting just to know who else is in the same boat.

you need to have taken 8 ap exams, scoring a 4 or higher on each of them. and by the way, does ap natl realyl make a difference with ivies? to what extent? i woulda figured that most of their applicants were uber qualified :/

The fact that you have taken 8 tests (especiallly when counted the old way with half vs full tests) and done well is probably impressive to adcoms. It shows that you've a) taken the hardest classes avaliable and b)succeeded in college level coursework. In previous years, very few juniors got the award, so it probably meant a lot more then than it does now.

Here's a thread (mine) about that issue of how strongly adcoms look at courseloads.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=25263
I took one (which is the only possible AP @ our school) AP Euro as soph, and got a 4 (i was lucky, too)
This year:
Courses: AP Chem, Calc BC, Music THeory, USH, Stats
Self Study: AP Physics B, Psychology, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics.
Thus, my favorite day of the year will def. be 5/13 @ 4 o'clock.
Good luck to you all

I have a quesiton; so if I take Physics B, and get a 5 does that still count? Or B part of C? Let's say I take 3, Bio, US, and Physics B, assuming I get all 5's is that 3 subjects there or two? Thanks!

yes, Physics B is considered as a full year course.
There are two Physics C's (E/M and another one which i forgot) and each are considered a semester course (though now it doesn't matter for the awards)

Your example would give you 3 (three) AP exams.

Sorry, random question--do the 1/2 tests like Calc AB, Environmental Science, Psych, etc. count as half a "test" for the National AP Scholar? I thought I read somewhere on the collegeboard website that they were going to change it to full tests this year, but I'm not sure now that I've read this thread...? Thanks for any clarification.

Bah. I slacked off in freshman and sophomore years and only took 1 AP class...which was Euro, in which I got a 3 >_< Taking 5 APs this year and 5 next year, though...

So for your National AP Scholar award to help you in the admissions process, you'd have to qualify as a junior, right? Congrats to everyone who did (or who might this year), it's quite an accomplishment

all tests are counted as full year courses now. this means that there's no 1/2 a test when counting the number of tests for an ap award.

yep
which means i can get a 3 on 2 of my exams...hehe

National AP scholar in my junior year. 11 AP exams that year ....... 6 5's

11 AP exams in one year is insane.

I think some of you need help. National Scholar would be nice, but you will probably burn yourself out and mess up on an exam. I took one soph year, world and got a 5. This year I have 5 AP's, 4 classes, 1 self study and it is plenty. I figure ill get at least one 3 this year(bio).

What do I get with 6 AP exams all 4's and 5's? Ill definitely get national by senior year if i test well.

no, I am not burned out. I just applied myself for the 2 weeks before the exam, got a few 3's but I passed them all (one cancellation) oh well. Now, I;m beyond ap taking classes at local community college

"Need help"? Hah. I'm both a lazy slacker and a National AP Scholar who's applying to college this year.

To answer someone's question, the reason you don't see many is the fact that many schools don't even offer 8 APs to take - I know mine doesn't.
