National AP Scholars

Would this be a BIG boost? Or not really a stand-out?

just an award. lots of ppl get it.

How do you get that award? I want it.

Lots of people? Only 3 got it in my entire school so far...but maybe its because my schools so crappy lol.

You have to take up to 8 AP tests, and score a 3.5 or above I think.

You have to score well on your AP exams. I think it's for getting 5's? My sister got one, and thusfar she's gotten two 5s and two 3s on her AP exams, so my guess is that went for the 5s.

You have to score at least a 4 on eight or more AP exams, AND have an average AP score of at least 4 on all exams taken. So if you had eight 4's and one 3, you wouldn't qualify.

ummm there is many destinctions for AP examinations, go to collegeboard.com since they r the ones who make the exams and they have a list of the requirements for each award

Not with those stats she didn't. You're confusing "National AP Scholar" (impressive) with some of the other AP-Awards (not quite as impressive).

To answer the original poster, it's certainly an impressive award, but it isn't a "hook" or anything like that. It does say that you're intelligent and likely able to handle anything college can throw at you. :)

yeah. national ap scholar is 8 exams with all 4 or above.
ap scholar is 3 exams w/ average 3.
then there's w/ distinction/honor and stuff.

not that many juniors had national ap scholar (only 87). it was really prestigious b4 collegeboard changed the half year/full year thing and now all ******** ap's count the same as the hardcore ones.

hah, I got it as a junior..... so happy, but yeah, AP Environmental science and aP human geography.... are jokes

I'm on track to get the National AP Scholar award as a junior as well. Does this count as one of those "national" awards that HYPSM applicants generally should have?

There is not a single award that the majority of HYPSM applications "should" have (though National Merit is perhaps the most common).

Further, wrathofgod64 claims that only 87 Juniors recieve the National AP Scholar award, so, given that data and the tens of thousands of applicants, I'm confused as to how you would figure that the award is one that "applicants generally should have" ?

If you're asking whether or not this counts as national recognition (that all high schoolers aspire for, in an attempt to stand out), then I would say no. Significant national recognition involves more than just test scores. Generally, such recognition is based on talent.

Hope it helps!

I'm doing so much work just for that award (as junior) it's not even funny... Online courses + hardest curriculum + self study = lots and lots of time. There were 2 people who got it last year in my state as juniors, so it should be pretty impressive?

Impressive? Certainly. But it's still not a "hook."

if only a small number of people got it and fit with the rest of their applicant pool i think it would be a hook

all i know is that a lot of people in my school who have been taken AP classes have gotten it

Would you include this on your application, or would it be pretty evident that you took that many AP by your transcript?

I would definitely add it to the app. (especially if you're a junior)

Considering fewer people get this Nat'l AP Scholar award than 1600s, I'd think it's very good.
Last year only 87 people in the country got their Nat'l Scholar award after Junior year (or younger).

Somehow I don't believe that this award is that easy to get. Read some of the threads I've posted and read others' opinion.

Danielsjang is completely correct. To be a National AP Scholar, especially by junior year (to be shown on one's transcript while applying to college), is a great honor. Many people are not aware of the different titles and THINK they have been recognized for the most prestigious award. Here is the breakdown of the awards taken straight from the CollegeBoard website.

AP Scholar - Granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

AP Scholar with Honor - Granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction - Granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

National AP Scholar - Granted to students in the United States who receive an average grade of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
