Hey.
I have heard that parking and driving is a pain at UCLA.
Parking is roughly $1k a year, and that seems a bit too unreasonable for me.
Also i have heard that they do not offer on campus parking for those living on campus.
So i dont know if i should bring my car at UCLA or not.
What have you guys decided?

If you can get a handicap pass you can park at the bunche building for free. That is what I plan to do (my back injury is flaring up again).

not taking my car, parking is horrible at ucla :(

its okay, ill walk so i can lose weight haha

170$something each quarter for on-campus student, if 3 people buy one permit can be cheaper, check the ucla website.

im not taking mine either!! just hoping i dont miss a once in a lifetime concert or something…but besides that im ok without a car.

I dont know.
I think $240 a quarter seems a bit reasonable, considering i wont be attending summer.
But is it managable without a car?

for those of you living two to three hours from campus. how do you plan on getting home?

lax or figure out amtrak

for those of you who are unfamiliar with westwood / LA and the surrounding area, know that it’s totally unnecessary to have a car if you don’t have a DAILY commute to make. even if you do, it’s really quite manageable without a car. i’ve been getting around on a bike and with public transportation and don’t feel disadvantaged at all.
granted, a car would be more convenient for day trips / concerts or whatever, but you should think of it as an added luxury. keep in mind that you’ll probably meet people with cars, who you’ll probably be hanging out with, who will probably end up driving you places you’d really like / need to go, and even if not, (ie if you want to see a show), taxis aren’t too expensive when split between 4 or more people.
buy a road bike and take advantage of the LA weather.

I just dont want to bring my car, and treat it as a liability.
Dont want to enter class 10 mins late because it was hard to find decent parking.

I decided not to bring my car because the cost is outrageous. I am living in an apartment, and a parking spot in an additional $125/month on top of rent. Two of my roommates are bringing cars and parking them on campus (so they will have to walk to get to their cars), which is a lot cheaper than the apartment parking.
I’m such a princess about driving everywhere though, so we’ll see how it goes.

^ you dont have to pay for parking. parking is a pain in westwood sometimes but it is doable. i’m bringing my car, my apartment comes with parking but i would probably bring it even if i didn’t have parking included. i want to have it in case i need to go home for a weekend which is about 45 minutes away without traffic (keyword:without) and i dont like having to rely on somebody to drive me somewhere if its needed.

if you dont mind me asking, what apartment complex are you living in zutopiafan?

I live in the bay area, and my parents are very adamant about not letting me bringing my car down there. (They’re scared my car will break down and I won’t know how to deal with it.) How do I convince them it’s necessary for me to have my car? I heard too many horror stories from my friends about the public transportation…

I just want to go to the beach (Venice!) at least twice a week, and visit my friends at USC once in a while… Thinking about living in an apartment.

^ack i know this is kind of off topic, but venice is fillled with homeless people ;[ the beach itself is nice, but the surrounding area is a real let downer.

i live near UCLA (15 miles away-ish) and i couldnt imagine living in LA without a car! public transport here SUCKS

I’m living in Midvale Plaza next year, sacooperr.
I really want to have my car with me, but its such a piece that I don’t even think it would survive the trip down (I live in the bay area, about 45 min east of SF). I have family in Orange County so it would be really nice to go see them, or just to have to flexibility and security of having a car.
Hopefully, I will save the money to have it my senior year, and hopefully to have a different car too.

pskate, I dont know how easily convinced your parents are, but maybe you can tell them how bad the public transportation is, and how you wouldnt want to be stranded somewhere. Also, you could look up a mechanic by ucla and learn how your insurance company works (in terms of roadside assistance), and explain to them how you would get help with your car if something happens with it.

i guess i’m going to have to rely on my little brother to pick me up from uci to go home. lol

thats funny my boyfriend is living there this year its a pretty nice complex. they have a jacuzzi on the roof! haha i’m living down the street in the corner of ophir and midvale its the green apartment complex hah

but yeah i remember i went to CSU Chico for a semester right out of high school and the beginning of the semester i left my car at home (in orange county). it didn’t last long before the end of the semester i had my car up there.

hope it all works out though! either way there are always people you’ll meet that will have cars.

Well thats good to know! I havent actually seen it because my friends picked it out.
Maybe we will see each other around? :)

I hope it works out too, but being from the suburbs I’m not very savy about public transportation…yet.

I’m so weary about leaving my car behind. The thought of it makes me feel like it would be cutting off my legs or something; I don’t know how I would function in life without my car.
