I took the ACT for the first time in June, and got a 34 composite. I understand that this is in the 99th percentile and is considered a good score, but my math score was lower (30). Would this harm me in any way for college admissions?

Most colleges focus more on the composite. The 30 is a good score too though.

Depends what you want to major in. If you’re looking to go into a STEM field, I say do a little practicing with the red book and take it again. Since that was your first time, with a little practice your composite could go up a point! (Which could make a difference in scholarship money.)

If you want to major in a non-math oriented field, I say stick with your 34 and spend the time working on essays. 34 is a superb score and a 35 wouldn’t make or break your admittance chances.

I also got a 34 (technically a 33.5) on my first ACT because of my 29 in math. I knew it was a fluke, so I took one more practice test to ensure I knew what I was doing and took the ACT a second time. I raised my score to a 35 (35.25, so actually a 1.75 point increase) with a 35 in math!

Good luck!
