How much sleep do you need to function?

If I get six hours, I’m good. I can function with 4-5, but it’s not something that I do often. My ideal amount is about 7 hours.

School year it’s typically 5-6 hours of sleep. It will get me through the day, but after school, when that tired wall hits, I’m fighting to stay awake. If I do stay awake and not have practice or homework, ill force myself to go to the gym. The more energy used only makes up for a better and easier sleep IMO lol. During the summer, I’m usually up by 6 AM to go volunteer but only get 3-5 hours of sleep due to my inability to sleep before 12 unless I’m dead which I usually am only during school.

^Lol, typical summer sleeping pattern.

My kid rarely went to bed before 2am as HS junior, while getting up 6:30am for school. Occasionally no sleep at all. He usually needed 2hrs nap right after school. One of his classmates took caffeine pills to stay all night, but his performance suffered a lot, so did his health.

Other than junior year, normally my kid needs 8hrs+ sleeping. Staying healthy and happy is always most important, IMO. He’s got admitted to his first choice Ivy school, so I guess top schools dont require sleeplessness, they instead look for something more interesting and unique.

Sometimes I get as low as 3-4 but very tired the next day but slightly manageable with a coffee in the morning. On a good night I get 7 to 8 and try to catch up on weekends. Like for sleep aid apps that wake you up when your body is most ready based off movement

I’d say at least 7 hours. Losing just 1 hour of sleep can make you very groggy.

5 hours for me, but that’s kind of stretching it. Unfortunately, with my schedule, I don’t get nearly as much as I want.
I’ve never pulled an all-nighter though, even at all-night parties or sleepovers. I don’t think it will ever happen either, because sleep is prioritized above anything and everything else in my life. Even if I get an F for its sake.

I’ve done 1-2 hrs for finals week cramming, but that leads to a major crash at the end of the week. Overall, I function best over the school year with 5 hrs minimum. I’m practically nocturnal though, I focus much better in the evening.

4 or 5 hours but if I go a few days with 4-5 hours I start to lose concentration and such

I usually get about 6.

During the school year, I got 3-5 hours of sleep per night and for the most part, functioned just fine. On the weekends and during the summer, I sleep 10-12 hours a night.

Summer: 9+
School: 6+, preferably 7.5

It’s great to see what education is doing to young children like myself.

@drexter (pg1): LOL, studying for 44 hours straight. If I was in your shoes, I would’ve been like, “Man, **** this ****”, and settled for an 80 on the exam.

School year: Usually 5-7 hours. I was barely awake in the early morning and after lunch.

Summer: 8-12 hours…ahhhh

Without taking any naps the whole day…six hours at least.

Lucky you guys don’t have work or volunteering in the morning :(.

Wha…why do some of you think you need to adjust to 3-4 hours of sleep for school?
I graduated from high school in May with a 4.0, multiple AP classes, and a good number of ECs that I dedicated a lot of time to. Most of the time I got 8 and a half hours of sleep, or seven at the least. Maybe six occasionally, but that was rare.
I got along fine, and you will, too. Skipping sleep is NOT going to help you; finding a way to manage your time will. I preferred to study during our advisement period each morning at school rather than take extra time at home; sometimes this meant not sitting and talking to my friends, but to me, that’s better than not getting enough sleep. I don’t know about you guys, but if I get anywhere less than eight hours, I get awful headaches and, when I’m running particularly low on sleep, an upset stomach. If you’re studying in lieu of sleep, chances are it’s going to be difficult for you to focus, anyways. My philosophy, when cramming for a test the night before (which was a regular thing for me), was that if it was getting late and I felt like I still didn’t know the material well enough, I should just go to sleep- I knew I’d do better if I was well-rested, that I might even recall some information I had forgotten.
Trust me, studying is not worth losing sleep over. You can maintain all A’s and your sanity, I promise! (Although I hear it’s different in college…sigh)

Under 5 hours of sleep, and I start to feel the negative effects. I like having 6 or more hours of sleep during the week and 8 or more hours of sleep during the weekend.

I’m still on summer break, but during the school year I usually get around 6 hours of sleep (I go to bed around 12:30 and get up at 6:30). I find that I need around 7 to function properly.

However, I have noticed that in the summer (or around June when it gets hot) I need more sleep than 7 hours, more like 8 to function properly or else I will doze off because it’s just too hot…

During the school year, I usually sleep from -midnight to 6:15 in the morning. Most nights, I get a bit less sleep. I have gone some weeks where I sleep from 2-6 each weekday, but my body tries to recover by sleeping the entire weekend away, so I try to not to push it that far.

The summer is better, because my activities are closer to home than school is and they start later. So I usually get a bare minimum of seven hours, but usually nine hours. =/

junior year I went with 2-4…But then I slept in class so I got about 2 hours there total. So I guess 2-6 max daily. Never again.
