How screwed am I? You can laugh :(

Hey all, Im currently a Berkeley City College student who graduated High School in 2010. Im trying to transfer to UCSD,UCLA,UCB, and UC Davis. But upfront, my application is "wishy washy" and not so great...

My intended major is Biology.

Here is my situation: I graduated in 2010 from HS(in California). I went to UC Santa Cruz for a quarter, and then went to Berkeley City College to transfer to another UC. But the real dilemma is my HS record. In high school I took classes at Berkeley City College for the summer. I did badly.. and I found out I have to include these in my transcript :( . This really brings me down in terms of my already bad GPA. So now Im really worried and sad that a transfer might not happen.. I absolutely have to transfer this year =/

Here is what my transcript looks like.

Summer 2008(still in High School)
English, Preparation for Comp/Reading. Grade : D
Math, Elementary Algebra. Grade: C

Summer 2009(still in High School)
Business, Introduction to Business. Grade :B

"Please explain the GAP in education between the summer 2009 and fall 2010 terms:"

My Explanation: During Summer 2008 and 2009, I was a high school student who was taking community college classes. My counselor has told me that my GPA will be recalculated to exclude my summer 2008/2009 grades, and I hope that is the case. Furthermore, I believe that English 201A is not a transferable class.

NOW I AM IN COLLEGE
Fall 2010 at UC Santa Cruz

American Studies, Introduction Grade: C
Economics, Microeconomics Grade: B-
Generic Humanties/art Course Grade : B-
"Please explain the gap:"

My explanation: I transferred from UC Santa Cruz to Berkeley City College because I had decided to transfer to a different UC. Also it was cheaper to attended Berkeley City College.

NOW I AM IN BERKELEY CITY COLLEGE
Spring 2011 at Berkeley City College

General Chemistry Grade: D
English, comp/reading Grade: B
Math, Business Calc. Grade: B
Sociology, Intro Grade: A

Sumer 2011 at Berkeley City College

Retook General Chemistry. Grade: B ----- This will replace the D i got earlier.
English, critical thinking Grade:B
Math, intro to stats. Grade: A

Fall 2011.(these are planned courses)

Anthropology
Biology
Calculus
Intro to psychology.

Coursework Summary
GPA: Units(Sem/Qtr):
ASSIST Certified Courses: 1 3.28
Non-ASSIST Certified Courses: 2.00
UC Courses: 2.46
Overall: 2.94

So, I like to think on the outside, my transcript looks really bad.. But i do feel like aside from the 2 C's and the D that I replaced.. my transcript is all right, but not superb.
Ill get much better grades this upcoming spring, Im sure, but the colleges wont see that.
My high school and UC Santa Cruz record is really depressing me, along with some of the bad apples in the college coursework. Something that does not help is that im Korean.. and compared to all the other super star koreans, im really lacking.

As for pre-reqs, Im about 75-90% done depending on which university. its about 90% done for UC Davis.
If all goes well, my IGETC will be finished as well.
My Intended major is Biology.

Well, sorry for the REALLY LONG POST! But i would really like some feedback =(
You can laugh, but I really want some legit answers too.
Will volunteering(related to major) help me? i plan to take 2 volunteer jobs.
Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot: If appeals are allowed for transfer students.. this is my dream... Show them my fall2011/spring 2012 grades and BAM! all straight A's and many volunteer hours. If I somehow do this, how will it affect the appeal?

Are you planning to transfer for fall 2012 or fall 2013?

Hi, thanks for the reply…
im trying to apply for fall 2012… haha i forgot to add that

hmmm, i think ur GPA is higher i know that if those classes u took in HS are not UC transferrable they wont count in ur GPA. I also took classes when i was in HS and i took a math class, intermediate algebra, and got a B. it was not factored in my gpa since it was not UC transferable. calculate yur gpa again without those grade dat are not transferrable and without that D and i dont think it should be that bad =]
let me know whats ur GPA =]

college courses taken in high school still count if they are transferable courses.

From the courses you listed, your uc gpa should be a lot higher than 2.94. Try recalculating without the non-transferable courses/ courses you took over. I don’t think you are totally screwed yet.

Hey guys , thanks again for the replies

@ear … Ill get back to you this Monday when fall2011 starts. I gotta ask my counselor what is transferable and what is not. But… i did a quick estimate and my GPA still turns out to be pretty low… 3.11 :frowning:

If i get all A’s this semester then it will increase to 3.38.

This is me right now … :(

do really well this semester, apply to safety schools as well, i think u might have a chance at UCD but i doub it for UCB or UCLA, UCSD id how it will play out since they changed their admission process for this year and know one knows what to expect but you can apply as one of ur reach schools.
good luck =]

I honestly recommend applying for fall 2013 because that will give you enough time to bring your GPA up to 3.5+. Your GPA is pretty low which puts you at a disadvantage, but miracles do happen so don’t think you’ll get rejected because of this.

Hey guys, i think none of my classes from summer 2008 transfers over for credit eligibility. When I was typing my stuff out for TAG… the courses from summer 2008 and were not listed and I had to manually put them in.
Should I just delete all of summer2008 ? or will they ask for it

sorry for the double post… wont let me edit.

Also, looking at my GPA… my UC transferable GPA is 3.28… just .02 away from a UC davis TAG. is there anything I can do to let me TAG Davis?

still would like my above question answered as well =)

You are correct, hun. Those two courses do not transfer over, nor does the English class from spring 2011.

i’m assuming that:
English Preparation for Comp/Reading. Grade : D
and
English, comp/reading Grade: B
are the same class.

@ above poster

thanks for posting,
actually, the two classes are separate. The “preparation” is not a transferable course. But the recent one i took is

I don’t really like to sugarcoat things for users on CC. Therefore, I would also recommend waiting until Fall '13 to apply. To be honest, you haven’t yet shown that you are capable of straight A’s, so how would we (or admissions) even know that you can achieve this during the Fall semester? 2 Bs and an A isn’t even close to straight As. Are you even considered a full time student? Are you working while you go to school or are you just taking minimal classes because that’s all you can handle? Your GPA isn’t THAT bad (if you bump it up to a 3.3 I mean), but it’s definitely not helping your case. Also, your 1st Gap Explanation reads as an excuse, not an explanation. I would personally rewrite it. FYI, they will not entirely ignore those grades regardless.

Additionally, going into Fall semester, you haven’t completed the second semester of Gen Chem, ANY Bio (even though this is your major and for UCD you will need 3 lower division courses), ANY Physics, ANY Ochem, or ANY Calculus. If you complete a single Bio class and Calc 1 in the Fall, you will need to take Gen Chem 2 and Calc 2 in the Spring to have the absolute MINIMAL requirements for an already selective major at UCD. This is also similar for the other UCs.

I can promise you that you will be outright rejected from UCB without completing their entire Bio sequence (which amounts to 4 classes at most CCs) and I do not know a single person who was accepted into L&S (Bio) without having taken OChem. UCLA at minimum requires you to take a second semester of Bio in addition to one semester of OChem which you will not be able to complete. Bio at UCSD is impacted and has similar requirements to what I’ve already mentioned.

Perhaps I’m missing something (like AP credit?), but how exactly do you figure that you’re 75-90% done with pre-reqs at UCD or for at UC for that matter?

hi thanks alot for replying,
@killmyentourage
Ok, i will rewrite the Gap explanation… ill just have to think of a way to rewrite it.

btw, I am a full time student. In Spring2011 I took 15 out of 18 units allowed. In the summer, I went over the unit limit to take the classes.
4 classes for a regular semester is not enough? I can fit in one more class this next semester maybe.

Also: Im going to volunteer at two locations this semester as well.
Also, when I said 75-90% done, I meant that by the end of spring 2012, I should have alot done. At the most I will be missing, physics,chem1B,Ochem and Calc 3. Wow lol~I guess that is actually a ton.
Physics wasnt offered in my school. So i think that leaves Chem1B,Ochem and Calc 3.
If i had one more semester I’ll be finished…damn

Also for UCD, I wasn’t aware you had to finish a 2nd semester of chem!!Now that I see the minimum, should I just switch Bio 1B for Chem 1B? (this is for spring 2012).
Below is the minimum requirements for UCD.

Mathematics 16A/B/C* or 17A/B/C or 21A/B
Chemistry 2A/B/C
Biological Sciences 2A or 2B or 2C
(Series completion highly recommended)

:( well Im not sure anymore…Fall 2013 is so far away and my parents were already disappointed that I only got into UCSC and back to BCC.

Well in the Spring, you got a D in one of your four classes so technically you only completed three. Four is fine, just make sure that you’re passing all of them! Is the Bio class you have in the Fall Molecular Bio?

You don’t have the minimum requirements to apply to UCLA, Cal, or UCSD for Bio in Fall '12. Realistically, your only option for '12 out of the ones you listed is UCD, provided you complete at least one Bio and Calc 1 this Fall, and Gen Chem 2 and Calc 2 in the Spring. But like I said, you will still only have the absolute minimum requirements finished.

If you consider an extra year at CC, you can bump up your GPA much more and actually put yourself in a position where you can be a deserving candidate. You really only screwed up a few classes, the more classes you take, the more opportunity you have to offset that. I would suggest applying to Davis this year and maybe one or two other UCs. For UCI and UCSB, you would need to take Gen Chem 2 and an additional Bio class (Organism most likely) in the Spring to fulfill minimum requirements (don’t forget you already also plan on taking Calc 2 this semester). If money isn’t an issue, you can try to apply to those 3, and if you don’t get in to where you want, then wait an additional year.

Ignore your parents. They aren’t the ones going to college.

Hi again, thanks for the quick reply
The Bio I am taking is only general biology…:frowning:
Also, Im considering getting a unit extension again to cram in another class.
btw, does art count towards your gpa? im assuming it dosnt lol.

As for minimum reqs, here is my plan
Fall 2011.
Bio 1A
Calc I
Anthropology
Intro to psychology.

Spring 2012
Bio 1B or Chem 1B <– You are recomending chem 1B though right?
IF I take chem 1B, I think ill be able to take organic chem as well, if it’s offered.
Calc II
then, 1-2 classes free for whatever ill need

All the while Ill be volunteering (does this even help?)

Do you think they will let me finish up my classes during the summer before transfer? I had a friend who did this.

As for my parents… its gonna be a tough one :(

What CC do you go to?

You have to take Chem 1B as a minimum requirement to transfer anywhere. So, yes, you HAVE to take Chem 1B in the Spring if you want to transfer as a Bio major for Fall '12. You usually can’t take Ochem until GenChem is completed.

If you want to apply to Davis, you HAVE to take Calc 2 in the Spring.

If you would like to apply to UCI or UCSB, you HAVE to take the second class in the bio sequence but you wouldn’t have to take Calc 2.

If you want to apply to all 3 (D/I/SB) then you would have to take GenChem 2, Calc 2, and Bio 2 in the Spring.

(These are your only options since there’s no point applying to Cal, UCLA, or UCSD without the minimum requirements. I assume you don’t want to go to UCM, UCR, or back to UCSC.)

I go to Berkeley City College
Here is the class list… Im attending the “BIOL 1A, 5 Units” class - its the first one listed.
[Biology Courses Descriptions](http://berkeley.peralta.edu/apps/pub.asp?Q=178)

the class number is 42775

Hi, I did not notice your edited post.
Ok, I will replace my Bio 1B with Chem 1B

But here is another plan…
I can take Chem 1B this fall, then on spring, take Ochem and Bio 1A. The only thing bad i see with this is… when I apply during Fall… i haven’t taken a single bio class lol.
Also: I will definitely be taking Calc II during spring.

EDIT: Also are there appeals for transfer applicants?
