How soon will we hear about admission decision?

I’m wondering if anyone knows how the rolling admissions works if the admissions counselors are still in travel season? Does each admissions rep review applications on the road and have authority to make decisions if certain gpa/curriculam/test score criteria are met? Do they present applicants to a committee at Tulane or via conference call or skype? Do they only post decisions later in the week or daily? This thread has been so interesting and exciting to follow and makes me want to understand the process.

I really don’t know the exact details. I know they do look at things while traveling, but how they converse while traveling and make decisions I am not entirely sure. I have some guesses, but I will see if I can talk to someone in admissions when they are not so busy and find out for sure. If anyone else finds out anything, be sure to post.

we were told that the admissions counselors make the decisions for the region if certain criteria are met. They started the reviews once they were back at Tulane. The changeover to electronic info has not gone as planned!!! we have all seen the Gibson debacle. If criteria not met, or they are unsure then they have another counselor review (higher up) and/or discuss in their committee meetings. Most counselors are not traveling much now and some have a few trips planned through mid month

That pretty much is what I understood and guessed as well, that obvious accepts or declines can be made by the officer themself, and other cases are by committee. I didn’t know/think about having a single peer consult, but that makes sense. Do you know if Faye (head of admissions) has final approval for all decisions? I also wonder if the merit awards can be made by an individual counselor or if those are at the upper level, either solely or at least for approval.

Good question! I wonder if the kids who got results already have some of the same reps? Ours is Hannah Udell.

Our admissions rep is Rachel Kohn (in case that info is helpful to anyone).

I really feel for anyone who is not getting full cooperation from their HS. They can be so frustrating! Getting DS’ GPA and class rank in early September was like pulling teeth. I emailed GC that DS needs to get apps in early for EA AND for merit money, specifically noting Tulane. If she balked, I was ready to call the director of guidance. I reminded her in an email (nicely) how aggressive the school is about pushing AP classes early, pushing IB, pushing, pushing, pushing. Now that we are ready early, you’re going to make us wait? Really? NO WAY. I was firm, but polite. Well, I sent my email in August and, of course, they don’t work in the summer. But when she replied in September, she stated that she “checked with the director of guidance” and she was able to provide me with DS’ info. It’s his freaking info. from the end of junior year. As far as I was concerned, they should have given that to us before common app was open on August 1. Anyway, we got what we needed (GC wasn’t surprised as, three years ago, my DD was all done with her apps by mid-October.)

Fast forward to now. Guidance won’t send out any transcripts, recs, etc. until after kid applies (app, supps, payment). Need to make an appt with GC and bring paperwork (receipts, special forms, etc.). DS has met with GC 2x already for several apps. Didn’t get to keep his appt last week to get in the paperwork for the rest of his college apps because school was cancelled all week due to the hurricane. So he went to guidance this morning to make appt. Secretary was giving him the run around, asking him when deadlines are. He firmly told her that he needs an appt assap. Got an appt for tomorrow. I’ve trained him well. This kid’s going to be ok!

But with another storm upon us now, I hope school is not cancelled again!

EDITED: Just re-read what I wrote. What a rant! Sorry, but this hit a sore spot for me!

“I am also interested to check out the Parkview Inn which is VERY close and looks cute. Anyone stayed there before?”

The Parkview is a good place, so long as you like B&Bs as compared to a hotel. Great location for getting a feel for the uptown neighborhood surrounding TU (Magazine St, Oak St), although you’d still want to trek down to the FQ if you are a Nola newbie.

I do know that 3 of the admissions counselors are new this year. Hannah is one of them I think. Not sure how that might be affecting everything.

Thanks for the additiional info, Fallenchemist and Madre1956.

Thanks, FC. I’ve also emailed our GC to ask if she knows what the process is. She (the GC) had told me she was going to talk to Hannah one-on-one about my son when she came for the session at his HS. There were so many kids (25) that he had no chance of talking to her himself. We need some good news here…just got power back and are looking out at about 4-5 inches of snow right now. :(

Wow. We just got a dusting, didn’t stick.

25 kids, that’s amazing. I think the word about Tulane is clearly spreading.

LINYMOM - My husband and my daughter, Lauren, will be landing around 4:00 pm on Fri, Dec 1 (flying from Boston). I will let them know about the music in the quad although I’m not sure if they’ll make it to campus in time. I made reservations for them at Marriott Courtyard New Orleans Metairie on 2 Galleria Blvd. 1-504-838-3800. The rate was reasonable with the AAA discount and it is 6 miles from campus. We’re hoping for some good news before the trip.

Yes, FC… lots of kids from his HS have applied or are applying. There were a mix of super-smart and average kids, and the history shows Tulane takes about 50% of the applicants from the school.

It’s also funny that here on CC it seems that many of the Tulane applicants are also applying to U of Miami (my son’s #2 choice). Not as many kids from his school apply there. Frankly, it’s much easier to get from Westchester County to Florida than to NOLA (we’ll have to fly out of LGA instead of our nice little airport in White Plains!).

LINYMOM - forgot to mention that I can’t PM because I do not have 15 posts yet.

mavitale - I would say that in the time I have been doing this Miami is the school with the most cross-applications from OOS people. Boston U is another, as are USC (CA, not SC), Vandy and WUSTL. There are a number of others that have significant overlap but I would estimate not to the degree those do. Nothing scientific about that list, just seems that way from what I see on here and elsewhere.

And yes, NOLA isn’t the easiest airport to get to unless you are flying from Dallas, Houston, maybe a couple of others.

Our admissions counselor (Laura Meagher) is brand new and I think she is excellent. She was the first one for our region in the last three years that was actually a Tulane grad and it really makes a difference in the presentation. The level of enthusiasm and information beyond the video was far better than either of the last two. She is a 2012 grad, very polished, energetic and someone the perspective students could relate to. Our application experience went much smoother this time around than with S1, despite the Gibson ups and downs. I can’t speak for the others new counselors, but what our admissions counselor lacks in admissions experience, she more than makes up for with her first hand knowledge of the university. I hope Tulane continues to put their own graduates in the recruiting role going forward.

Rachel Kohn is our admissions counselor too (New Jersey). We met with her in April when we visited Tulane. She was very nice and promptly responded to emails from DS. Still waiting for our letter, which may have been delayed due to the hurricane and now the blizzard going on right now! Can you say global warming??

Atoinette Abboud is the Admissions Counselor for the Northeast and a Tulane Grad. She has a lot of passion for the university and is very professional. She responds quickly via email to my D’s questions.

Has anyone been accepted from the south east? I’m starting to lose hope :(

Also wondering the same thing for Colorado. Toby who is your admission’s counselor?
