How to get admitted to FSU

I love reading all this positive info on the College of Music!

i have a question with the admissions...I'm going to be applying to FSU asap which i think is August 1st it said on the website. So Can I apply in early August but not send my high scool transcripts until school starts, which I think is like in the middle of August. Or do they have to be sent the same time you apply?

They will hold your file until everything is complete, then add it to the admissions pool for that wave. A complete app consists of:
Online Application
Essay/Resume
SAT/ACT Scores
Application Fee
High School Transcripts

Go ahead and fill out the application (as long as it is by the deadline for that wave, it doesn't matter when) and then send your SAT/ACT scores and get your GC to send the transcripts when school starts up.

ok thanks...and is the essay optional?

Yeah it is optional, but I would recommend doing it anyway.
My friend and I (with almost the exact same stats) both applied and were accepted. He didn't do the essay, but it's only 500 words so you might as well do it.

alrighty thanks!

In the current environment the essay is NOT optional in my opinion.

Why take the chance?

A word of caution to all hopeful FSU applicants...

The Fall 2008 SAT average has increased to 1265 (note that this reflects students committed to attend FSU, not just "accepted" students).

FSU has regained its place with UFL and Miami in terms of Fall average SAT, after the ramp up in enrollment in the 1990s, which tended to lower average scores.

SAT Summary - Fall FSU-UMiami-UF:

FSU 1265 (committed to attend FSU)
Miami 1275 ("accepted" students, this means the real average is probably significantly lower)
UFL 1280 (Fall 2007 average - post drop/add, the most reliable score I could find)

FSU still takes the best of the sub-test scores from multiple tries at the SAT and ACT, as do UF and many other schools. FSU still places rigor of high school/related courses and grades in these courses as more important than SAT/ACT scores. Be forewarned, though, that SAT/ACT scores come next in importance.

Seeing that FSU's tuition is among the lowest in the U.S. its still a great value for the money.

Best bets:

Take all the tough courses you can

Get good grades

Study/take a prep course for the ACT/SAT and retake to get in the high 1200s at a minimum

Write good essay(s)

Apply EARLY! (This means as soon as applications are taken - usually on or around August 1)

Take nothing for granted...meet with FSU admissions if you are able to discuss your application.

Start this process EARLY. Allow time for corrections and visits. By your high school junior year you should be nearly done with many of these things.

AVOID SENIORITIS - You stand a real risk of having your FSU acceptance revoked if your grades drop your senior year.

What source did you use to get those SAT scores?

Same sources used for the other posts.

My D received a phone call from an FSU student, who'd been a graduate of one of our local high schools. One of those touching base, have you visited, do you have any questions, what are you thinking of majoring in kind of phone calls. She told my D: apply early and that on-line apps would become available 8/4/08.

zebes

Nice touch. They really do make you feel welcome at FSU.

Bump

I thought some of the student in the process of applying would appreciate some of the info on this thread.

Good idea. The sharp increase in SAT average will make admission to FSU substantially more difficult.

Good luck to all applicants!

I want to transfer into FSU from my community college and I will be getting my AA this spring. Do I have to send in my SAT scores because they where taken back in highschool and where very low in the 800 range, I will end up graduating the community college with a 3.5. What I'm asking is do they really look at the SAT scores rigorously even from a transferring student?

Apply early and for summer and all you need is a pulse.

I hope its that easy johnny hehe.

No, it's not that easy. Johnny T. does this every now and then.

Thanks for posting these tips. I'm applying right now and I only have my essay and transcripts to turn in.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I just logged onto the undergrad application section of FSU's site and it says they are now only accepting applications for the Spring semester. I guess all that "apply early" stuff really is important!
