During the past two weeks I have had a test for each of my humanities courses. The tests consisted of defining a few terms in 10 words or more and a few essay questions. The essay questions had to be at least 75 words. I know I didn't get an A. Luckily the lowest test score will be dropped. I have another test in about 2 weeks. Same format I assume. When the tests were handed out I felt so stupid! The questions seemed easy. And I remembered going over the answers during lectures. I just don't know how to study for such a boring subject.

One of the classes is once a week from 7pm-9:30pm. I guess since it's a night class I get a bit sleepy sometimes. Since it's so boring I have a hard time grasping the material while studying. Any tips?

Perhaps studying in a group would help? Try explaining the material to another person (it doesn’t even have to be someone in the class–it could be a roommate, friend, parent, whatever) and have them ask you questions about it. They don’t have to be potential test questions–just questions that force you to make sure you really understand what you’re talking about and you’re not just going through the motions.

If you have other students in your class to study with, perhaps you could quiz each other. Make up potential essay questions to give each other or quiz each other terms.

Studying with other people can help to keep you engaged since you’re talking to other students, and trying to explain the material to other people can help you make sure you actually understand it.

I study for all classes like that in the most boring way possible, I rewrite all the stuff I need to know until I can write it without looking at the original. In my American Government class I almost failed my first test (they were all essay type, literally like two+ pages hand-written), and the lowest grade wouldn’t be dropped. I managed to get 100% on the following four tests and got an A in the class. I do the same thing for Spanish, re-write all the vocab until I can write it without looking at the original… even if it is 100+ words I can have most of them down in a couple days.
