Yeah, my host wore a cal sucks t-shirt, but he said that was just because of the rivalry thing. He told me he really respected that school and most of his friends go there so he goes up there once in a while.

your hoho or your roho? did you stay in frosoco?

that rhymed giggle

When I stayed overnight in my friend's dorm room at Stanford everyone in Roble Hall was welcoming, even though I was from cough Berkeley cough.

Sure there were a few unoffensive jokes about Cal, but overall all the students I met were easygoing and friendly.

As a Cal student, I'm not offended by the "Cal sucks" apparel. In fact, I bet the student store at Berkeley sells "Stanfurd sucks" apparel too.

To answer a few things that have come up:

We don't hate Cal much. The Cal-bashing is largely in jest, and we know it. I'm told they hate us more, but I have yet to see that firsthand (maybe next year when I go to Big Game in Berkeley). We really do hate U$C.

Fountain hopping is perfectly acceptable year-round, weather permitting. In the spring, the Band tends to have a swim-in-the-Claw-and-hang-out time at least once a week (I think it's three times a week this year).

My experience was that when I first arrived, there were a lot of annoying preppy kids. However, by the end of fall quarter, almost all had dropped the facade and become reasonably normal people. I wouldn't worry about the preppiness if I were you.

^Yea, I really don't like how people bashed berkeley so much. It was kinda annoying.
Even the president insulted Berkeley at the questions section ("Actually, I believe he was affiliated with the Berkeley Law School...", effectively calling the questioner a liar).

The bashing of HYPM was also a little immature (though funny) at the a cappella show.
well, kyle...that's just not nice language...i thought you were in roble anyway?
Yes, but it seemed that everywhere I went, the Casa Zapata kids were chanting their little songs.

hope you can ignore the attitude of a lot of the profros when you make your decision. I think a lot of the profros are just a little insecure and so they feel like they have to compare SAT scores still haha.
I do ignore them, for the most part. A lot of them, I think, felt the need to bash Berkeley because they see that as an "integral" part of Stanford culture--when it isn't.
Most of the people here don't REALLY hate Cal. We have more of a rivalry with them.
I don't think the people at Stanford hate Cal; rather, many of them seem to have a disdain for the school. The a cappella song "For the Longest Time" or w/e was kinda immature (insulting the students' intelligence, saying they stay for 8 years, etc.).

My hall went fountain-hopping at 1 AM. I didn't go.

Kyle, with all due respect, why are you letting your unending obsession with Cal's greatness torture you in such a manner? Are you hoping to change the overall nature of a brotherly rivalry because you find it excessive?

If the immaturity and overwhelming scorn for Cal bothers you so much, there is an easy solution. You can always visit for the Big Game.

Umm, the questioner had his facts mixed. John Yoo, the guy in the center of the torture memo scandal, is a law prof at Berkeley, not at Stanford.

ah.....well that is pretty funny then.

why not kyle? it was really fun

So... did Kyle accept elsewhere? By looking at his posts, he is much too mature or uptight for Paradise. If he is attending Stanford, he'll need to learn to let the Cal thing go. Otherwise it will be a long 4 years.

He has the right frame of mind, if you ask me...:D

I didn't like a certain attitude I encountered while at Stanford. That's all.

(There were some very elitist people there--taking it beyond "brotherly rivalry.")

That he named names seemed a bit unprofessional.

I was waaaayy too tired from everything that day. Not to mention I had to get up really early the next morning. =p

Why are you judging me when you don't even know what you're talking about? Believe me, there were some downright asinine people. Even Stanford students agreed with me: they were being asinine about the whole Cal thing. "Too mature and uptight"? Nice, as soon as I admit a negative about your "Paradise," I'm "too mature and uptight"?

Honestly, you guys, it was one thing I didn't like while there. Believe it or not, Stanford does have some problems. Get over it.

Wouldn't you be ****ed if lements of your institution were being pegged as one of the key players in the legal defense of the use of torture?

He might've used a condescending tone, and probably shouldn't have turned it into a joke. But I don't think he truly had malicious intent.

That seems to imply that the questioner had malicious intent, which I doubt.

Agreed.

wierd...i rarely have seen any cal bashing the so far this year outside of the Big Game week. I actually have a cal t-shirt my cal friends gave me and I wear it and my dormmates don't even care.

I thought cal students hate stanford far more than stanford students hate cal. This is from a personal experience.
