For an 800, do you have to be fluent and know 2500+ characters like the AP exam, or is it easier?

I have heard that the Chinese subject test is really easy. You don’t have to be fluent to get an 800 but I wonder how important for a Chinese, like me, to take the the test because wouldn’t it be meaningless to college admissions?

No, they care, and it serves as an extra SAT II and proves that you know the language. I would suggest that you take the AP exam too because there is no easier way to earn those 12 credit hours. Oh, also, because you’re from Hong Kong, it will be treated as a foreign language anyway.

No, if you are a Chinese person who decides to take Chinese SAT II and you get an 800, it will be obvious to colleges why you did so well. It would most likely be meaningless.

Yes! If you know Mandarin Chinese and are from Hong Kong, take it! People from northeastern China, Shezhen, Taiwan, or any other area that uses Mandarin Chinese should not take it because they won’t care that you know your native language. Still, if you want the 12 credit hours, you should take the AP exam. I know a lot about these things but am clueless about the content of the SAT II. :(

If Chinese is your mother tongue I recommend that you not take Chinese. I agree with dblazer. The score is meaningless if you are already clearly fluent in Chinese.

Actually, if Chinese is your mother tongue, doesn’t it make sense to take it? You’d get an easy 800 with no effort whatsoever!

Does anyone have anything to say about the original topic?
