Recently I received my acceptance to a branch of pitt, and this was my first letter of acceptance...

I'm not interested in attending a branch.
I'm mostly worried because I'm trying to gain acceptance into other good colleges and im very worried because This isn't a thrilling start.

I'm majoring in comp sci
I have a 3.1 GPA due to some obsticles i overcame
And I have a 1790 sat
I realize this is low as a whole, but I'm nervous for future letters that will come my way.

from what a kid told me, they got into psu with a similar SAT score. i think their gpa was around 89 on a 100 point scale, it may have been a little higher. and i never saw the acceptance letter so i had to take them at their word. Discuss your GPA issues in a letter to schools you are applying to. where else are you applying to. i think your SAT score is fine for the pa state schools such as bloomsburg, iup, etc. also, if possible at this point, have a solid GPA this semester and hopefully ur grades will show an upward trend. however, if you had a personal tragedy your junior year and you bring it to the school’s attention, i think most schools would at least listen and understand you would have a gpa dip that year and you would not need an upward trend under those circumstances, so long as this year is solid. what is your math SAT breakdown and how have you done in your science and math courses at school?

630 math sat
In advanced math
Taken sciences physics etc

Grades this year are good.

I’m applying a lot of out of state places.

Purdue
Case western
University of rochester
Rochester institute of tech
Vtech
Syracuse
Binghamton
Stony brook
James Madison
Miami oh
Dayton
Shippensburg

u should be able to get into several of those schools, namely binghampton, stonybrook, dayton, and Ship for sure. maybe several others but i don’t know enough about the rest of the schools to intellegently comment. what is your CR score and r u a NY or Pa resident? and do you know if ur residency matters for any of teh state schools u apploed for in NY or Pa? my guess is your cr score combined withe the gpa is what kept u out of pitt. But pitt is VERY competitive these days and many kids currently doing well at other colleges did not get into pitt so don;'t take the alternate location offer to heart. if u want to pm me on your obstacles, i can give better advice on how much to disclose to schools. Generally, it is a good idea but it would depend on the obstacles. u diong well this year will strenghten your admission odds. do u have a shot at merit scholarships at any of these schools? if you, so you may want to retest but not at the expense of your grades. having good grades this semester is key.

well, i was actually thinking you might have a shot at scholarships at soem of teh schools. I’d visit Ship to make sure you;d like it there. it’s a long cry from the pittsburgh area. but i think ur chances are decent at a number of these schools. there is something called naviance that can help you fine tune this issue but i think you may need a guidance counselor to help you with naviance. We also used cappex to estimate my kid’s odds at various schools. i’d recomend you set up a cappex account and see what their calculator comes up with, There are other online programs too that will help you estimate your odds.

I think Pitt Bradford for example offers a $5,500 Panther scholarship. You might save a bunch of money in the first two years if you start at a Pitt branch campus and might be able to transfer later if your GPA increases.
If you go to college navigator website you can compare up to four schools side by side.
I checked there and the Pitt branches like Greensburg, Johnstown have the highest SAT scores. 75% numbers are 540-550 for CR, 560-570 for M and 530-540 W. Compare that to Ship and IUP and some PSU branches near you like Beaver and Greater Allegheny and they all range around the same, 530 for CR and 540-560 for M (75%).
You should visit these schools since they are relatively close by and look at their compsci departments and ask about scholarships. Might as well save money if you can.
Case, U Rochester and RIT have higher SAT scores. 25% scores for CR are 600, 600 and 540 respectively.
For math 670, 650, 570. So you might get accepted to RIT, but others less likely.
Costs are also alot higher $47,000 to $60,000 compared to around $25,000 for the instate schools above.

true on costs being higher but i think Case is pretty generous on need based aid so our op’s out of pockets could be less than the sticker price at some of these private schools. not sure of his/her chances of getting into case though
