How would I go about staying overnight at Cornell?

I may be interested in ED at Cornell, but I want to stay overnight first to get a feel for the campus atmosphere and the classes. How could I go about organizing this so I may have every opportunity to get to know the campus (I know that you need to sign up with the Red Carpet Society). My problem is that although I live 4.5 hours away from Cornell, the Greyhound bus takes over 8 hours to get there (I'll assume it's because it's a bus). I guess I'd have to leave early, but then when I arrive in Ithaca, how would I be able to get into campus? Cab? Shuttle Bus? Would it be possible to stay over on Sunday night and look at academics on Monday so that I don't miss much school? On average how many courses could I fit in to sit on on a Monday? Would it be possible to sit in on one large introductory course for my major (this is what I feel is the most important part of my visit, to see how I like the feel of the large size of courses) and one smaller, more close knit course in my major or not in my major? What does this cost? Any other information at all would be useful, as I'm sure some lurkers on this board have done this. Thanks!

Well I can help you with one of those lol...You can take either a cab or a shuttle bus...when I visited I took a cab up and a shuttle bus back lol. It was funny, the cab driver took the money (which was a good amount over the price) and didn't give any change back...he acted like he deserved the tip even though we didn't want him to take the whole bill. My mom was like like...watever lol.

Shortline has bus routes that stop right in the Cornell campus (North Campus, West Campus, Theater Arts Center to be specific).

Buses stop on campus.

Ask your host if he can find out when the classes you're looking for are through a friend. You can fit several courses in a day.

I wouldn't mind being a host for some of these pre-frosh people. How can I sign up to be a host?

same website should have information on hosting. There is a 1 time, approximately 1 hour training course that you do, and then you get emails every time there are prefrosh coming, and you can put one of them up.

sounds cool, I checked the cornell clubs/activites site and they mention the red carpet society club. Would I have to join this club in order to be a host for pre-frosh?
Also, do you (sparticus) know anything about being a tour guide for campus tours? I think it would be a pretty cool job.

i used to be on red carpet e-board so I can say that it's not really a club. at the beginning of each semester, freshmen have the opportunity to go to training session (shouldn't last more than 15-20 mins) and that will last you forever (as long as you stay on campus anyway). then each week, there's individual hosting and bus trips. if there is a day you can host (or a Sunday for bus trip) then email back. for individual hosting, they will provide hometown and college/potential major so you can try to match. bus trip it's a crapshoot, but you can host 2 which will be a little easier (they can keep each other entertained for the most part).

RCS (red carpet society) really need male hosts, so if you can please sign up. It's a pretty good experience, and can lend up to 40 hours of leadership for tradition.

I'm an incoming transfer sophomore. Will I be allowed to be a host or can only freshmen?

jason: anyone in campus housing can host. Inquire about the tour guide job at the information office (Day Hall).
