Howard University Class of 2020!

I see double the costs then haha thanks for the advice @ReturningFavor @partyof5 I thought that the ‘up to’ amount is the amount offered? It’s the amount offered to me in the Bisonweb in my case.

Dont tell me that the amount on Bisonweb can be changed :frowning:

@partyof5 and @JAMCAFE a yield problem would be a good thing. A lesson needs to be learned, at the very least, regarding what a mess admissions seemed to be this year with timing and changing scholarships and announcing that change. Meanwhile, the HU president just got appointed by President O to the new Hbcu initiative. I like HU’s new president, but so much still to be done at him his home base.

They just offered my so the same thing…on May 6? Really?

Umm @partyof5 @umsigmadom do u mind if I ask what u mean by very small amount? I’m dead worried about all this messed up admissions right now

Capstone varies with need - i.e. it is not a pure merit award anymore. The lower your EFC the higher your need, consequently, the higher your Capstone award. If your need changes, your award will change too.

@JustinPon it says up to $7400. I’m traveling now so I haven’t looked at bisonweb to confirm the exact amount.

@ReturningFavor as we called it, they are probably having yield problems. I Don’t understand why they didn’t get rid of legacy and make the capstone the “new legacy”=full tuition. We don’t qualify for aid and have no problem paying room and board. I’m not paying 30k for the level of service that I am receiving. My daughter received a full tuition scholarship from a PWI but she will be attending a different HBCU.

Hmm yes it is indeed low not worth the problems the faculties are creating :/. @JAMCAFE does that apply for international students as well? Cuz we obvz cant apply for FAFSA (no fed aid nor loans) and the only determining factors will be SAT and GPA? I have just sent the bank statement to them today via DHL. Gonna take 3-5days. Will the amount in there cause changes to the CAPSTONE I’ve received? Cuz the amount there is equivalent to $40k…

@JustinPon I doubt a bank statement will be used to change your offer. However, you should seek clarification of the exact sum of your award. A range is problematic because your visa application requires some certainty as to how your costs will be covered. Howard has to provide you a form (I-20) that itemizes your scholarship as well as family or other contribution to your cost of attendance. In presenting this form to immigration you will essentially be agreeing that your family can and will cover the difference between your award and the full cost of attendance.

I thought the amount offered written on Bisonweb was the exact amount I was given? O.o They say an I-20 wont be issued until I give them a WES ICAP evaluation. No idea how to start that and from what I have read takes about a month for the whole process.

@JustinPon Ok, I looked back at your post that your award is $24k so it’s a set amount. If you come across other US students’ Capstone awards described here or on Twitter you will see that the offer is stated as a range.

I am not familiar with WES ICAP but it seems you just need to meet the gpa requirements to renew your $24k scholarship annually.

I see thx for your help mate. I have received an email just like the others here like “up to $24,173”. Is it the range u were talking about? @JAMCAFE But when I checked on Bisonweb, it’s stated as HUFS CAPSTONE scholarship / offered / term-unscheduled / $24,173. And yea about the WES thing. The admissions office just told me about it and when I called them they told me the deadline was since feb 26th. BRAVO!!

The Founders and Presidential have been and still seem to be fully fixed. So long as you meet the requirements (for instance GPA of 3.3 for Founders and 3.5 for presidential) then you get the tuition, fees, room, board and book voucher. It is not based on need at all.
However, since the Capstone is now based on need, I think it would be important to ask if each year the amount will be re-determined based on that year’s EFC (and thus your need), as well as of course the GPA requirement. Find out if the Capstone ‘need’ amount is set for all 4 years based on what you get entering as a freshman, or re-determined each year.

By the way, the GPA (for my D and I assume for future scholarships) is evaluated at the end of the spring semester, not the end of the summer. Meaning, if you slip up you cannot take summer courses to try and bring the GPA up before fall to keep your scholarship. They evaluate the GPA for the school year after the close of the spring term for verification of continuation of qualifying for the scholarship for the next academic year.

My son’s Capstone offer was “up to $9,779”. No bueno.

Hahahahaha! A day late and a dollar (maybe several dollars) short.

I have a feeling that if your child really wants to go, now is the best time to ask for more money. May be panic mode right now for admissions with regards to yield. “Never let a crisis go to waste”.

@umsigmadom I thought about that since I currently have a high performing scholarship child there. You would think they would give up some more. This has left a really bad taste with me though, so I think we will go elsewhere.

@partyof5 @JAMCAFE and @umsigmadom I actually heard that someone at our church caved and is taking the partial scholarship offered, rescinding another enrollment (and forfeiting their deposit) and now headed to Howard. The kid begged and begged and will take out loans to cover what they can’t. On another thread here on CC someone mentioned having friends turning down full rides elsewhere and taking out lots of loans for Howard after only getting a little money. I just think those are risking moves.
My D who attends Howard is in DC now with my husband and some of our younger kids. One keeps insisting he is going to Howard. She convinced him to take an ACT prep course this summer to try and make it happen and said “Mom and Dad can’t and won’t pay a bunch for you to go here and NONE of us will let you take out a mountain of loans. Better get a 32 on the ACT and have lots of back up plans you’ll be happy with just in case scholarships don’t come”. Even though she is a hard core Howard lover, she agrees that a huge financial squeeze for our family to pay or massive loans for him won’t happen in this house, not if there are other great options. I am sure your kids will be very happy at the colleges that grabbed them due to Howard’s poor Administrative handling of things this year. Not only are they losing out on your kids, but on you all who would clearly be involved, supportive HU parents. Their loss.

Our son got amazing packages to several HBCU’s and a package to a PWI that he’s not going to able to turn down. He really loved Howard after visiting and attending a 6 week residential STEM program for HS scholars there last summer. He would have loved to attend Howard after meeting some incredible people and staff especially from the School of Pharmacy. What s tragedy that both students and the institution will be missing out. I truly hope the administration knows what’s going on and learns from this disastrous admissions cycle. My son has decided that he will be taking his talents to South Beach in the Fall.

Whats funny, is I wonder how Howard even came up with the Capstone dollar amount, since we didnt file a FAFSA?
