Howard University Class of 2020!

@partyof5…that is the BEST indication of the dysfunction of the A building. Good Lord. It would be hysterical if it was not so ridiculous!

I wondered that too @partyof5! It’s like folks are in a panic and now are starting to backtrack illogically. So confusing.

Got my I-20 fixed. Praise Jesus!!!

I’m still stuck with WES for an I-20 :frowning: anyone know any consequences a delayed I-20 may unleash? I’m dead worried right now. They told me that WES deadline was on Feb 26th but I was only told of the requirements only when I asked them about what else is required for an I-20? (that was on April 27th) I dont know what to do right now if the consequences are going to be dire. I have already dismisses all my other school admittances :’(

@JustinPon There are a ton of international students at Howard…from India, African, etc. If you call Howard and get to someone who is helpful and seems to know what they are talking about, keep that person’s name. Follow up with that person for all questions if you can.
I am sorry, I don’t know anything about the WES or 1-20 but do know that Howard is very use to dealing with Internationals. Is the process you are stuck in (WES) an internal Howard process or agency that evaluates you for getting an I-20 or something else?

I think u can call WES an agency required by Howard to evaluate my IGCSEs into US standard which is needed, apparently, for an I-20. @ReturningFavor

@JustinPon where are you from? From your queries, I assume you are international student. So I hope you did send Howard statement of financial resources. Did you pledge to pay full COA? I mean I am stuck on that part now. I was eyeing for Legacy scholarship and pledged to pay about 13k. But they were like NO you have to pledge to pay full at first without assuming getting an aid or employment. Did that happen in your case? Mind sharing some insights. BTW I am from Nepal.

They might have been better served by cobbling together these woeful offers to make a decent offer to someone who would still consider attending. I am also curious why the awards vary without FAFSA on file.

My S will attend his super safety and keep his/our money for med school. Howard’s snafu just made it easier to convince S to take the cheapest option.

@bigyan You should not count on getting aid in latter years. Colleges offer their best packages to incoming freshmen. Scholarships for continuing students are very competitive and usually no more than $2,000 and nonrenewable.

@bigyan I actually did nothing of the sort bruh.I waited until I got my scholarship decision before I even sent the financial forms. Didnt want them to interfere with a potential decision that’s why mate.
@JAMCAFE I thought that all I needed to do was to maintain the gpa and we’re all cool with the scholarship? Or can that amount change?

@JustinPon Your offer is renewable on the terms of your incoming freshman award. I am cautioning bigyan about deciding to go to Howard with the hope of getting significant scholarships to get through the next 3 years.

@JAMCAFE and @JustinPon for the Founders and Presidential scholarships (which are full rides) you need to maintain the required GPA (3.3 and 3.5 respectively). There are also other requirements. READ your scholarship contract fully. For instance the main one, at least in previous years, is that there is a requirement of the number of credit hours you must take per term (15 I think). However, as the Capstone now has a need component, the question will be is that component evaluated yearly or set in stone for all years. What do the contracts say?

Again, keeping the scholarship does require work, but for my D it is WELL worth the effort not only to be at Howard but to not have financial stress in college. This summer, she heads overseas again (which she can afford because of the money saved by the scholarship) and then has an internship/research set here at home, thanks to the great HU alumni network.

@JAMCAFE I agree that several (even if reduced than the number of previous years) solid scholarships would have been better than random small ones. Maybe the ‘experiment’ will end and they will revise. My next son up is hoping so as he is sweating trying to hit a 32 ACT and without that, HU may have to come off his list!

I wonder if they’ve thoroughly considered the .2 difference in renewal GPA between the Presidential and Founders. I don’t think a laptop + $450 per year more in book voucher is worth fighting to maintain a 3.5 versus a 3.3 in a tough major.

@jamcafe…I agree. Our D had a 32 on the ACT. Had she hit 34, I would have asked for the Founders instead anyway! Keeping a 3.3 has been doable. I think they should have to really work to keep scholarships and 3.3 is fair. After all, they are not paying anything for college. It is a great gift. 3.5 is tough. However, I must say that most Presidential scholars she knows turned down places like Williams, Yale, Princeton, UofChicago, etc. They are a stellar group. Some came for the free ride. But some also clearly just really, really wanted the HU experience. Some stay on for graduate school. Others move one. One we met was headed to Harvard medical school. Another is now at Princeton’s Theology graduate program. For that group, I don’t think they are too worried about 3.5. It would have stressed my D (and me!) out endlessly. Heck, 3.3 worries me at times!

However, with planning and focus, they can hold onto the 3.5. Some actually choose not to do the honors programs as they want to be sure they can meet the GPA requirement and they are often involved with the debate team, research opportunities, leadership, etc. They also come in with so many APs that they never have to overload their schedules. Finally, many Founders and Presidential scholars she knows don’t work during the school year. Ours doesn’t. Her job is to keep a 3.3!

Can anyone here inform me of the sort of laptop one can get via the Presidential Scholarship?

@Nedcone The presidential scholarship no longer supplies a laptop. It is now a one-time $2000 stipend. At least this was the information given to me by someone in financial aid

@thelittlechica Thank you for this information! I am a bit in the dark as to what a $2000.00 stipend entails. Does this mean I am free to select how to use all two thousand dollars towards a laptop? Or do I just receive it in general for anything?

@nedcone I didn’t get that much information, sorry

What does ‘Web accepted’ mean in Bisonweb financial aid category? It changed from accepted to web accepted. What does it mean?

@justinPon I would think just confirmation that you accepted it via the web/bison site. Did you go onto Bison web and accept your full scholarship?
