Howard University Class of 2020!

When are freshmen scholarships added to the bill? Does it take this long for it to be rendered? Pls help

Around what time do freshmen pay their balances? Especially internationals. It’s after we reach on campus because of the hold right? Also when did you set up your payment plan? When you reach on campus (for internationals )?

@justinpon they havent posted scholarships yet. They post from late Jul to early Aug

Thank you @partyof5. So umm just like @Hopeful42020 asked, it is only then (after scholarships are added) should freshmen pay their bills, international and domestic students alike, right? I’m just worried scholarships funds might be cancelled due to lack of funds.

@JustinPon listed below is when HU posted the scholarships, and when I paid

2013 7/22(I PAID IN JUL)
2014 8/25( I PAID 7/12)
2015 8/20(I PAID 7/31)

Thanks!! Another question: about the rental of the microfridge, do you know how much they cost for the year?? Just wondering if it’s better to buy a microfridge or just rent one each year.

Also, when do they give you the info to do the payment plan?

@partyof5 you paid before they posted the scholarship?

If your scholarship covers housing, be aware that if you choose a room beyond the cost of that scholarship you are of course responsible for paying the difference. Each year my D has picked a room that cost a bit more than her scholarship covers, so we are billed the difference.

Also, screen shot your room assignment, print it, and have it on hand at move in. You want to be able to show that YOU know where you are placed, in case there is any mix up.

Our Freshman move in went well. I was overwhelmed as I had had no real exposure to an urban campus. But that was just physical logistics. People were helpful and we got a chance to chat with the University’s president, who was walking about, meeting and greeting.

Finally: If you are living in College Hall North, remember that you need items for your personal bathroom (shower curtain, trash can, plunger and cleaning items, toilet paper, etc.)…at least that was the case the initial year it opened. You have a private bath, not a communal hallway one.

@ReturningFavor If we will have to pay before they update the scholarships, will we have to do our own math and pay the remaining cost we see on Bisonweb’s account summary? Or can we do it only after they do so? Will doing the latter lead to any changes to the assignments (housing, etc.) we already got? Also, there is no way for an awarded Freshman Scholarship to be reduced right?

@JustinPon I can only speak from my experience via my daughter. We did not pay until late August or beyond, after classes began…once the scholarship money was applied to her account and we then saw the remaining balance (the room differential and 1 or 2 fees that the scholarship did not cover). This did not impact her ability to request and utilize her book voucher before that time nor was there any impact on her room assignment or anything else.

The full scholarship (tuition, fees, room and board and book voucher) were applied to her account around August 24/25 both fall semester. We payed a few hundred dollars, online, a few weeks after that money was applied so that we then knew exactly what was owed.
Reminder: They did NOT refund the difference when she chose a meal plan that was less than the amount the scholarship covered.

I think her friend who had a full ride as well paid $600 on the account well before move in, just to be safe. She was refunded what was not needed to clear her account once the scholarship was applied (sever hundred refunded, but the refund took weeks and weeks).

Finally if your scholarship does not cover housing and would be much more prone to pay up early, using the best estimate you can (or call FA/Business office and ask them what exactly you will owe once your scholarship $ are disbursed).

@ReturningFavor Thank you so much for the answer. Not being a full ride makes things much more confusing. Btw, there has never been such HU cases where scholarships for other students are reduced due to lack of funds after disbursement to continuing students and full-rides right? That would be a really nasty surprise.

The only time I know of where a student did not receive a scholarship they planned on was a returning student who did not meet the GPA requirement at the end of their freshman year (required GPA to keep the scholarship) and therefore the scholarship was not disbursed…it never moved from offered to accepted.

If you have done what you are required to and met all student requirements as an entering or returning student, then you should be just fine. I know that it is nerve wrecking. But thus far for us we’ve had no issues other than Howard just being a bit slow to disburse.

Thank you @ReturningFavor. Yes, all this slow process is leading to unnecessary anxiety. So basically, once a scholarship has been marked as “accepted”, regardless of being shown as divided between 2 semesters or just “unscheduled”, it means we’re in the clear right?

@JustinPon HU has a very limited number of microfridges, so we bought a refrigerator.

Any student still see on their financial aid Bisonweb page as “unscheduled” for terms?

For my fall bill only the pell grant and federal loan are listed as expected aid. I received a freshman scholarship as well, so that won’t be listed until maybe sometime this month, or in August?

Has anyone received a call from Howard increasing their scholarship?

No. Are u expecting a call for that ?

The first round of bills are out

Yea still without the scholarships tho
