Howard University Class of 2020!

There’s still scholarships to be had such as the Tylenol Future Care Scholarship whose deadline in June 30th. Also the CIA has a scholarship that not only provides money for school but also a paying job with benefits. Also medical professions including dentistry provide award for service programs. They will usually pay no less than full tuition for a promise of service after ur done with school. So you may not even have to pay for grad school. The program is called the National Health Service Corps I believe. Also check with the ADA and find out what opportunities are available. Once you get to school career services and financial aid should be able to help you with future scholarships and intenships as well.

@PreDent101 I responded on the Howard University: Tips to those who aren’t happy with their scholarship thread to your loan situation.
Regarding you math question posted: Check the math sequence. How many courses after algebra would you need in order to take Cal?

  1. College algebra for STEM majors
  2. PreCalculus
  3. College Algebra II
  4. Applied Calculus (for BUS majors &economics)
  5. Calculus I I need at least calculus I for dental school and it's on the entry exam. I don't want this to push me into a post bacc or master's program. @ReturningFavor

@PreDent101 Check with the math department as I am not sure if all you list is needed to take Calc I. You may just need Pre Cal or Alg II. Also, if you have not yet taken the math placement test then once taken they can advise you more accurately.

Does anyone’s financial aid status still have unsatisfied requirements on BisonWeb even after they have done everything. I did the counseling for one of the Fed loans and it said the school was notified but it still says I have unsatisfied requirements.

Do books and supplies really cost $3000?

@JustinPon no you shouldnt spend that much

@partyof5 Oh I see it’s just an estimate. Thank you. Does $1,500 sound reasonable or could it rise till $2k? I know it depends on the major but just wanna get an estimated total cost.

@JustinPon what is your major?

@JustinPon Rent books!! Don’t buy them and you’ll save hundreds of dollars

Electrical engineering @partyof5

@Snowybuny we can do that? Thanks for the info. If that is possible can we just use what our seniors used? or is that pushing too far? lol

@JustinPon If they’re the right edition then yes. There are various textbook rental sites online you can get books from if you don’t have the correct edition.

@JustinPon you will probably spend more due to your major, however @Snowybuny is correct. Yes, my kid rents most books from Chegg, or you will find friends who have taken the class and you can buy from them. There are facebook pages, and groupme chats to find out about books.

@partyof5 @Snowybuny Thank u so much for the info. Apparently, renting is the best choice so can you pls recommend me some sites, pages or links like Chegg that HU students use the most? I’ve read that HU uses books specified for their very courses so that might limit us to a much fewer selection of sites?

Once you find out the books you need, just go to Cheggs site. I think its more of the humanities courses that may be Howard specific. You will figure it out. My daughter spent a ton freshman year, then she learned the hang of renting, and finding students who were selling their books from the prior semester.

I think $1,500 is reasonable for books for an entire school year (fall and spring semester combined) although you really shouldn’t have to pay that much. Buy used books, rent books or purchase E-books and read the chapters on your Kindle, laptop or tablet.

Hey everybody. In my I-20 there is a blank for “passport name”. Will it pose any problems in the visa process or is it ok since the “given name” and “surname” and “preferred name” are the same as the one in my passport?

Is it a normal HU procedure? Is everything fine?

@TenaciousKen yeah everything is fine. Had that on my own too
