HS Senior Year Schedule Predicament

So, I have a major problem. I was planning on taking AP Calculus and French 5-6 this year, but they are on the same period and are the only periods available! I was going to do independent study French during 2nd period and do Calculus 4th, but now my French teacher bailed on me so I have to choose between 3rd year French and AP Calculus - both my most important classes of my senior year.

My counselor told me to do French during 4th and just retake Precal again during 2nd period, but I really don't feel like taking a whole year of it again, plus with the same teacher! Although I got my first B+'s because of that class, and I still feel a little shaky around the subjects I learned.

Should I take Precal again and do French during 4th period? Or just not do French at all and just take AP Calculus? Which would look better? What are my chances of getting into UW? (My #1 college choice)

Just for a little background info - my GPA is 3.9 and I am VP of Key Club, Sec. of Honors Society and Co-Pres. of French Club (although idk what i'm gonna do with that if I'm not taking French!) and was in Tacoma Youth Symphony, and I got 1760 on my SAT's -_- (embarressed) and I'm definitely planning on taking it again. Oh, and I'm in-state.

The person who was in charge of making our schedules this year is our ATHLETIC COORDINATOR! Fancy that? (Almost everyone I know has a messed up schedule) He put all of the high AP classes in the same period! ***!

My D had a similar scheduling problem. AP World Hist was offered the same period as AP Spanish 201/202. She took the Spanish and ended up with Physics instead of World History. :(

Does your school offer AP Statistics? Would that fit in your schedule. My personal opinion is that it would not look good to re-take a math class. But you do need to keep your math skills current. What about the local community college?

Yes, my school does offer AP Statistics, but guess what period it's during? 4th period... Yeah, it's pretty messed up. And I don't have time to sign up for running start for just 1 math class... :( Maybe I should just take AP Calculus... and not take French. But I'm afraid that only 2 years of a foreign language will look really bad on my record.

hmm... I think a little more info would be more helpful.

Are you worried about getting into the UW? If so, what are your stats?

Or, are you worried about AP credit replacement for certain classes at the UW? If so, what is your prospective major and what classes have you taken?

Yes, I'm worried that UW would look at 2 years of French as not good enough or taking Precal again as the same.

And I've said a few of my stats: My GPA is 3.9, I'm top 10 of my class of about 300 (if I remember correctly) in a fairly competitive high school, taken AP US History and AP English Lit. and gotten A's in both, involved in key club, orchestra, honors society, french club (although i might not be the Pres. anymore if I don't take French), and got 1760 on my SAT's (planning on taking it 1 more time).

I'm not worried about credit replacement for certain classes I just want to be the most qualified and able to compete w/ other prospective students at UW. I've heard nowadays a 3 year foreign language and all 4 years of math is pretty standard. And I really don't know about what I want to major in.

sorry... i was gone for quite a bit.

if that's your case, then I say go with taking an AP math (if your intended major is engineering, business, or pre-health) and explaining the situation in your application. there should be a space for that. otherwise, if you're going liberal arts, take the third year of foreign language, and again explain the situation.

i.e. since i'm an engineering major, the UW would rather i have solid math than foreign language, since foreign language isn't even a major requirement in the college of engineering.

good luck during application season! :)
