Hypothetical "thank you" letter from our kids

I continue to be amazed when I see questions from high school seniors who must navigate this entire college process on their own. Do our children realize how fortunate they are to have our support? I know that mine doesn't...

I think this is what a thank you letter from him would look like....

Dear Mom,

Thank you so much for making the four day, four state college visit trip with me last August. Wow I was really tired after visiting eight schools. I'm really sorry that I couldn't help drive or didn't talk too much, but I really needed to start all my summer reading for my AP classes (boy it's a good thing you didn't know about that sooner or you would have made me do it in July)

Thank you so much for nagging, complaining and forcing me to get all my applications in by November. Now I get to relax and enjoy my senior year. I’m sorry I missed the deadline for getting my portfolio to one of my schools, but is it really a big deal? It wasn’t my first choice school and I’d already been accepted everywhere else.

I’m really sorry about how messy my room is. I really could find all of my acceptance letters if I had to. I know that I could find all of my user ID’s and passwords too (they are on tiny scraps of paper on my desk – I think) But I know you have all that information stored in your computer and a hard copy sitting on your desk. So why do I have to be organized???

Thank you so much for knowing all about financial aid. Exactly what is it that you were doing with all those papers? FASFA, SAR, EFC, COA, CSS Profile, PELL Boy am I glad I don’t know what any of those things mean. I still don’t understand why I can’t just take out $40,000 in loans every year. Isn’t that what people do?

My friends and I are sharing the cost of the limo for the prom. Are you going to chip in? With all the money you save by clipping coupons and buying clothes for yourself off the clearance rack you probably have some extra money. I’d rather use my paycheck to buy those really cool $100 shoes I saw online.

I really don’t understand why you sometimes get upset that I’m not paying attention to all this extra college stuff. Dad says you spend a lot of time on this stuff and I should be more interested. But isn’t this just what parents are supposed to do?

Thanks again

A CCer's son

I didn’t know you had met my son…

Dead on.
