I am Asian, which sorority should I join?

Hey. I am interested in joining a sorority! Here are some insights about me:

I love to socialize, but I do prioritize my academics a lot as well. I may choose to skip some parties to study for exams. Is that acceptable in greek life?

I am Asian, and am curious about whether there are any multicultural sororities around? So far, the ones I have been too are either all-white or all-asian, which is not what I am looking for.

Apparently there is a stigma that sorority girls are shallow- is that true? Or is it just a generalization.

I care a lot about making close friendships and just having a group of people to chill with and trust.

Do give me some suggestions on sororities to join! (and a quick question, is it too late to rush only when I become a sophomore?)

You didn’t mention how attractive you are.

sophomore year isn’t “too late” to rush.

Lol to liquidus’ comment. I’m eligible in that category too but I won’t want a sorority that only looks at that as a main factor. It’s really important to me to be with girls who are chill and with nice personality as well. Also, what is the difference between PHC, NPHC, MCGC, IFC?

…maybe AOII?

Could someone give me an insight on greek life? From a non-party-er point of view. Because as I was browsing the websites, it seems like a great thing to be a part of. But in college, everyone just associated them with parties and not the academic support system, philanthropy and close friendships.

Sounds like you just need to make some friends in some sororities. We could all probably tell you the stereotypes of each sorority, but that’s really not the point. I have friends in almost every sorority, and they’re all great girls. It’s about finding a sorority that fits you, and the best and most definitive way of figuring this out would be by making friends with girls in sororities.

I second the comment about making friends. Since PHC fall formal recruitment is already over, based on your timing, here’s how I think you should approach it:

Do a bit of research about the councils

Ask your friends about their sororities (if they’re in a sorority)

Be on the lookout for recruitment events

Participate in PHC spring informal recruitment or check out chapters that are COBing

The four councils are as follows:
IFC – Interfraternity Council: only fraternities (no sororities)
PHC – Panhellenic Council: consists of NPC sororities, which are the type one typically associates with “sorority” (housed, bubbly, mostly white)
MCGC – Multicultural Greek Council: consists of fraternities and sororities that have specific cultural interest (i.e. Asian, Latin, etc.)
NPHC – National Panhellenic Council: consists of traditionally black fraternities and sororities

It’s beyond the scope of the post to describe each of the councils in detail, but the shortest way I can put it is that while chapters within the same council tend to have vaguely similar goals, those of different councils tend to provide completely different experiences.

It appears that you’d like to join a diverse chapter that doesn’t emphasize race. In this situation, I think you should check out the PHC chapters. Compared to campus demographics, they tend to contain a highly disproportionate amount of white people. However, at Cal, the chapters tend to be extremely diverse compared to elsewhere. In fact, I think there are asian and hispanic people in every chapter. You just can’t really tell until you actually meet.

So, start meeting people and answering the questions yourself. Because of timing, there is no time pressure to join any chapter. Only you can tell whether or not a chapter is a good fit for you.

Thanks for the tip everyone :)
