I have been accepted to the University of Maryland and I am waitng on my last letter which is from University of Delaware. This is going to be the toughest decision of my life! Does anyone have any insight or experiences with these two colleges? I know Maryland runs on a "semester" calendar and Delaware runs on a "4-1-4" what are the differences? Pros and cons of the schools?

what are you majoring in and think about what size of school younwould like to spend your life in for 4 years.

Just in terms of numbers, the two are fairly similar with University of Maryland having more of graduate presence than Delaware. If possible, it would be a good idea to visit both campuses. Ask to sit in on classes, visit the rec center and so on. If you have a pretty good idea of your major, look up the classes in the course schedule to see the type and size of classes they offer. You have plenty of time to decide and financial aid might help make the decision for you.

Since you’re probably not instate for both schools, what are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay? If your parents will pay full costs for either school then you will have a choice.

However, if you need a good bit of financial aid, then very likely the OOS school will not be affordable.

For the 4-1-4 vs. semester issue, read the websites carefully to compare the actual calendar dates, and to learn whether the January term is required or optional. In some cases students are required to enroll in coursework on or off campus during the January term, in other cases they are free to take a longer winter vacation if they choose. Many students enjoy January term classes because while they are more intense, they also make it possible to get through something that won’t fit otherwise very quickly. Also places with required January terms often have study abroad and study tour options available either through that college/university or through a consortium of institutions with similar calendars.
