I don't see why Georgetown is special...

Hey everyone. I'll just cut straight to the chase: I don't "get" Georgetown. I really don't see why it's special or why people are so eager to go here. I was just wondering if someone could enlighten me with some examples of why Georgetown is so good? Thanks! :)

-jesseo

For one, they have some of the country's top programs in International Relations, foreign languages, and pre-med/pre-law.

In addition to the excellent academics, have you ever been to D.C.? It is simply a great school in a great city. Lots of political and international stuff. I was talking with my interviewer who recently graduated from Georgetown and the opportunities he was offered while in school were amazing: He got to sit in with the Supreme Court justices, there were tons of internship opportunities in the city (such as with National Geographic-my fave),etc. BTW, did you apply to Georgetown, jesseo?

International relations majors have no better place to go, and all political science majors are guaranteed internships.

Well in addition to that it's the best college in the capital of the United States... that has to count for something.

Why is any college so special? It's a matter of personal taste.

Yeah... I did apply to Georgetown, but I was talking with some people about GTown, and it started to make me question why I applied... I'm just looking for some subjective opinions. Thanks! :)

Oh, and thanks for the responses. They've been very helpful.

Georgetown is great for so many reasons... the international focus, the fantastic area, the fabulous professors, the practically guranteed internships (especially in governement related fields), there's too many things to name.

Also, I think, because it is a highly respected, private, competitive university---many consider it to be among some of the lower ivies... there are more specific and unique reasons why many consider gtown to be "special," but the bottom line is that it is simply considered a top-notch university

I agree (even if USNEWS occasionally does not).

What did they rank Georgetown, #25 or so?

Because they're dumb. And those rankings measure things that don't really matter like alumni giving, endowment, retention rate, etc. IMO, it should all focus on solely academic subjects. It's just hard for me to believe that a place like Vanderbilt or Carnegie Mellon could be ranked higher than Georgetown.

i thought it was #11...and I don't get why we all are jumping to defend Georgetown. Georgetown is still Georgetown and providing all the reasons why it is what it is seems silly. ;)

In addition to internships, DC, etc, the students at Georgetown add a ton to the university. Just look at all the people from CC that already are accepted EA - there are going to be some amazing people there next year.

Hehe... thanks! LOL.

lol, 3:45, Dan, don't you sleep???

i think that's our time, EST. Dan lives in CA, and I hear they have a whole separate time zone out there, the heathens.

I just assumed each poster had their own timezone display, but now that I think about it, that wouldn't make sense. Well, I guess that means I was up later than him last night, as I was reading this board about 2:00 a.m. haha

LOL... 3:45! I don't know if I could stay up that late even if I tried. :p

You silly East-coasters...
