So I guess I’ll condense my whole high school career into a few sentences. I got a 3.3 weighted gpa sophomore year because I was unmotivated. First Semester of junior year I got a 4.33. I have a completely disabled brother who I take care of everyday because both my parents work. I played rugby freshman and sophomore year but had to quit to take care of my brother. I GOT A B IN BAND! I missed a total of 9 classes first semester because I would go to the library and study instead of going to band because I could already play the concert music well enough and we had a sub for a month. Because of this my band teacher was upset and she doesn’t like me so I got a B in BAND. So my grades were AP Physics A, AP US History A, English 11 A, AP CompSci, AP Calc B, Band B. So I went from a 4.5 to a 4.33 because of Band. Do colleges care about my band grade? Do they look at only my academic gpa? I’m just very upset because if I got an A in Band My total high school gpa would be a 3.9 weighted. It’s stupid because a useless arts class might effect my ability to get into a college for engineering.
First off, I’m sorry about your brother but in all honesty you deserved a B in band if you cut 9 classes. Lucky it wasn’t lower. The conductor needs the entire ensemble at each practice as you play as a unit. Thinking you could take advantage of a sub being there is not being a team player. The fact that you knew the music is irrelevant. You have nobody to blame for that grade but yourself. That said, non-academic classes do not carry the same weight as academic classes. Some colleges go so far as to recalculate applicants GPAs using academic subjects only. The band grade should not have a significant impact on your college admission.
I believe classes such as PE, Health, Band, Art, etc are excluded when colleges recalculate your GPA. Every school is different though.
