For the University of North Carolina, I think. The reason I post this here is because there has been a lot of discussion on these boards for likely letters.

Anyway, UNC tells us Jan. 15 if we got in or not (it's one of the best public universities in the states, along with UVA and UC Berkeley).

The letter said "thank you for your distinguished application" and "although we do not officially announce results until the 15th of January, we at the admissions office have already been impressed by your application."

Does this mean I am in? If it does, I am so happy to already be in a college!!! The rest of the letter just talked about other "distinguished students like you (me)" who went to UNC and their experiences there.

Only 8 or so days 'till we find out about Yale guys; just think, they have probably already decided (ahh)!

how did you apply to UNC early and Yale Single Choice Early Action?

By the way - congrats on your likely - that's awesome.

I was going to ask the same, but then I read that Yale's SCEA policy allows you to apply to another school EA if the notification comes after Jan. 1. Makes me wish I had realized this before, because I'm applying to UNC-CH as well...

You're definitely not allowed to apply early to both UNC-CH and Yale, I asked. Unless you're in-state and the only way you'd qualify for some scholarship would be to apply early. If I were you, I'd probably withdraw the UNC app or really really hope nobody finds out.

I'm pretty sure you are allowed. I called and asked. Because if you're OOS (and don't go to one of a few nominating HS's), you need to apply early to UNC to be considered for the Morehead-Cain.

...but you say you asked Yale too? this is weird. =/

Pianista--you are allowed to apply to a school early if it tells you after december. UNC tells you in January. Thus, you are allowed; I asked to, and did far more research than you :P.

lol- I did ask my regional person at the fair though, and called in and asked, as at one point I had a hard time deciding between early to MIT and Yale and one of the factors were where else I could apply early. Oh wells..

It is true that you can apply to Chapel Hill early notification....they are January and you do need to apply early for merit scholarship consideration. So Helicio- congrats and you're fine!

I don't see why any phone calls had to be made. It is all perfectly clear and better yet in writing which is much more protective than a phone call. UNC's notification is after Jan 1. The following is from the Yale site:

Q. I am applying to Yale under the Single Choice Early Action program. Can you explain the rules about applying to other colleges under their various early notification programs?

A. If you are an applicant to Yale under the Single Choice Early Action program, you may not apply to any early admissions program that notifies candidates before January 1, whether or not that program is binding. However, you may apply to another college's early notification program under certain conditions. First, you may apply to a public university's "rolling" admission program if the program is non-binding (meaning that you have until May 1 to respond). Second, you may apply to a college with an early deadline for scholarship awards, but only if the notification of admission occurs after January 1. Finally, you may apply to another college's "Round 2 Early Decision" program, but only if notification is after January 1. If you are admitted through another college's "Round 2 Early Decision" program, you must withdraw your application from Yale.

I know and I understand now. No need to beat it in. I just didn't realize that UNC notification was in January. I'm still happy with my choice applying SCEA to Yale and I'm already in at UMich, which I would've attended over UNC.

I understand that I made a mistake, and even though I'm a little ticked that I didn't get a more ... clear response (I asked at the same time I asked about UMich), it's over and I understand that I should've read it more closely.

When ask people to not "beat it in", you had suggested to Helicio that he withdraw his UNC application or hope "Yale" doesn't find out. If Helicio had acted upon your comments, it would have cost him his "likely" admission to UNC. That is the reason for the strong responses. People need to be careful about the accuracy of their advice.

As for your not realizing that the UNC notification was in January, Helicio states that the UNC notification is Jan 15 right there in his first post. That also was a tip off that your understanding, of which school apllications conflict w/ Yale's SCEA policies, had some points missing.

WAIT!
milessmiles:
it's NOT "for all intensive purposes," it's "for all intents and purposes!"
did you even know that!
i never knew that until a couple days ago
!!!!!!!!!!
but anyway, congrats!

smoda- I did realize it by my previous post, whereby I said "oh wells". I understand that it's my mistake and I apologize. I was just moving on.

OPRAH! haha all my teachers used to say that! then i learned it was "intents and purposes"...if you say it fast, it does sound like intensive purposes haha
