I got in!

Thanks, FC, it is literally $20K that I don’t have (to spend). ; )

We’ll either have to visit very soon, before the finals period, or wait until the second semester.

Is there any chance my D could still live in the honors dorm? I didn’t care much about her being to the admitted to the Honors Program. As you’ve explained, the calibre of student is high enough that it doesn’t make much of a difference and the extra couple of grand is not such a big deal, but she’s not a partier and she thinks she would find the atmosphere more to her liking based on what we’ve read. She’s taking the SAT again tomorrow (despite her protests after getting the letter today!). If she does markedly better could she reach out to her admissions counselor about the possibility of being reconsidered for the Honors Program? We wouldn’t seek any additional merit aid.

Thanks again!

Well, if she gets better stats she could absolutely reach out. She could then directly contact Dr. Luongo, head of the Honors Program. If you reach out to the admissions counselor, she would be reconsidered for merit aid too. Why not? If she deserves it, she should get it.

In any case, I have 3 suggestions regarding her housing situation (assuming she doesn’t get in the Honors Program).

1) She can still meet someone online that is in the Honors Program and wants Butler. If they want to room together and both want Butler, they will probably get it.

2) Apply to be in Wall, the Residential College Dorm. (There will also be a new residential College dorm opening this fall, if it is on schedule, but I am not clear on whether this is a freshman dorm or not.) This is also less of a party dorm, and the rooms are nice. They are suite style, while Butler is the old style hall bath dorm.

3) Apply to be in JL, the all girls dorm. It can get a bit rowdy on weekends, but typically is pretty “normal”. I don’t know if she has a problem with an all girls dorm. I cannot even begin to count, though, the number of students that thought they had been banished to purgatory when they got assigned to JL and ended up loving it.

Send me a PM after she gets her new scores, we can discuss the options again.

Fallen Chemist, I asked the question about the new dorm at one of the online chat sessions a week or so ago, and according to the admissions counselors online that night, the new dorm is slated to be a sophomore dorm. Your d will probably be happy to hear that!

LOL, not really. She is a sophomore now, so too late for her. And she might be abroad the entire year next year. Remains to be seen. But that is great to know about the dorm, thanks! It makes sense, since this year’s freshman class is so large and retention rates are setting records for Tulane.

fallenchemist - you have a PM.

Got it and replied, wolverine.

I GOT IN THIS WEEK!
I heard online via Gibson, but do you know when a formal statement will be sent either via email or mailed letter?!

It will be a mailed letter, and you should have it in 1-2 weeks after the posting on Gibson.

is it hard to get into tulane?
like avg gpa and avg sat/act score wise from high school

How do you check Gibson? I am not sure what that is.
I applied 2 weeks ago and have not heard.
What sre the chances of getting the $20k scholarship if my SAT is 2040, 4.0 weighted GPA, 6 AP courses heavy soccer EC, sister attends Tulane?
Thanks

thekidizbak - there are dozens of sites that list this kind of information, they can give you even more info than just those stats. However, average GPA is not very meaningful because some schools report weighted averages, Tulane reports unweighted (it is around 3.55-3.6). More important is class rank, where Tulane reports a little more than 60% in the top 10%, 82% in the top 20%. Average SAT would be about 2000, average ACT about 30.5 or so (I am taking the middle of the 25-75% range, which is not mathematically the average but won’t be far off).

kicker92 - You should have received an e-mail from Tulane giving you access to Gibson. If not, write or call your admissions counselor. [Tulane Admission: Meet Your Counselor](http://admission.tulane.edu/counselors/index.php)

Predicting scholarships is tough. You certainly are in the right ballpark though. I would say you are on the border between the $15,000 and the $20,000.

aright coo thanks chemist. id prob be a low match 32act /3.75 uw

I would say a solid match (not sure if low match means almost a safety or almost a reach). Assuming everything is in line (fairly decent number of AP’s if your school offers them, reasonable EC’s) I would be surprised if you didn’t get in.

I got accepted too :)

Congrats, NOLA. I know you have been looking at Tulane for some time.

I got my letter today, $20k scholarship!

Way to go, tribegirl! I wasn’t too far off, I guess.

Has anyone been admitted to the honors program here? My D got her letter today ($20k, yeah!), but we were hoping for the honors program with a 2150 SAT, 4.0 weighted GPA, and 10 AP courses. The letter didn’t say anything about it. Is she definitely out?

There have been a number of people that have been admitted with an invitation to the Honors Program already. $20K scholarship winners are not issued Honors Program invitations. All $25,000 are, and some $22,000 winners. However, since she was probably very close to the latter, she can apply to get in the HP after first semester if she gets at least a 3.6 GPA. Also, there is nothing stopping her from taking any honors course she wants, and I highly recommend that she take 1 or 2. I had an e-mail “conversation” about this with the head of the Honors Program, and he was very clear that he would never deny a good student (which your D obviously is) a place in an honors course unless it were just completely full. That includes the honors colloquium course, which my D really enjoyed.

Your other option is to send an e-mail to her admissions counselor and ask for reconsideration, especially if she has a really good semester now and raises her UW GPA some. This isn’t something you have to address immediately, since the change you would be seeking ($20,000 to $22,000 and HP consideration) is a fairly small one. See how her semester turns out, and if it improves her chances, go for it. If not, then I think just accept this decision and hopefully she can earn her way in fairly quickly once at Tulane.

Got my letter today! $22k + honors program
Maybe I’ll see some of y’all honors weekend :3

Good luck!
