I got my SSAT scores today....

That’s funny that that kid on page two wrote,

“To get into Andover, Exeter, or Deerfield you have to score 95% or above in each section to get in.”

Especially when they all have about a 91-94% average SSAT for accepted students. Also, considering I got a 45% on the math section which seems weird compared to a 97% overall. I didn’t study at all though, I’m just didn’t feel like having to put in all that time right after applications.

My daughter got a 98% in 5th grade on the SSAT. This year in 6th grade she got a 99%.

I am looking for someone who had info about the spatial test scores for CTY.

That was her last year with the lower level test. I got a 99% in 6th grade too. Next year she’ll start upper level, and the first year with that test is rough as its given for grades 7-11 (even though your scores are only compared to your grade and gender, you usually get better as you get older).

Is CTY like Duke Talent Identification Program in the South? My friend did CTY when he was in the north and I did TiP.

Center for Talented Youth comes from Johns Hopkin’s. I would very much like to talk to someone who knows a bit about the scores.

From what you are saying, the 7th grade ssat will be much harder. Is it safe to assume that the 98-99% more than likely will not happen?

I thought I read some where that a student will score about the same on their sat and ssat. Do you know this to be true?

I haven’t taken the SAT (Except for Duke TiP in Seventh Grade) so I wouldn’t know. The Upper Level test I’m pretty sure starts in 7th (possibly 8th, I’m about 60% sure its 7th) and since its the first year of a harder test it’ll be harder than the jump from 5th to 6th grade because you will be taking a harder test in the lowest grade. I’d expect it to go down at least a few points when you switch to the new test, but a bit of prep might be able to make that gap a little less. The year after that she should be back in her groove though.

I got all 99% and 98% in 8th grade. lol when I went for my interview at my current school they told me what to do when I get in/tried to convince me that their facilities are the best (new library…though I never actually got to experience the new library since it just started construction THEY LIED TO ME)

trust me, dont study. some people say im a natural born genius but im not. no one is born smart. i never study for anything and i get excellent grades all the time. i took the lower level of the ssat last year and i didnt study at all. i got a 2103 out of 2130. it was really easy. the trick is that when u study, ur just telling urself that u dont no something (therefore, ur studying). this thought will make u nervous and the pressure of a big test throws u off even more. u have 2 chill with it and just get a good grade

right now i am in 7th grade and i no 4 a fact that i had to get over 1600 on the SAT (NOT SSAT) to get into the cty program. when i found out, the testing deadline already past and i missed my chance. it was a bummer cause i took the test anyways and got i think 1800-1900. highest was 2400 so i did pretty bad but im in middle school so what do i no?

Can you give me a post of what u did to get accepted into Exeter? You probably had a hook, like musical talent or athletics. What qualities did you have? Some say that im a genius. thats overestimating. I’m not a genius. I just need to see a question and the answer. From there, I can find out how to figure out the solution without having learned it before. By the way, i dont have any musical talent, but I was a football star, track star, and basketball star. Please do not think that I am conceited. I just want to know ur opinion of whether or not I would make it.

@ joekim:

um, start a new chances thread. and 1800-1900 on SATs in grade 7 is amazing…
no, you don’t need to be a prodigy to get accepted into Exeter (although i’m sure that would help, haha!). you can PM thingslost, asiankid29, or istoleyournose! [ i hope i spelled those right ], they’re all going to Exeter next year. they’re all amazingly bright but i hardly doubt they’re all football, track, basketball, water kickboxing, bassoon, piccolo, math, or water polo prodigies…

you know ssats aren’t everything.
they actually probably don’t matter that much in the whole application process for bs.
i think it’s definitely more your essays and interviews.
though having a hook in sports or music would be great.

Nothing “is everything”! You should have your own ways to shine - it could be academics, or sports, or other activities you are passionate about. The only thing that you must have is that you have to “convince” your interview or your application readers that you are a nice person and have what it takes to be a trouble free part or better yet a contributor of the school community. Bear in mind also that each year and each school are different - it depends on the applicant pool and what the school is trying to improve on, etc. Bottom line: drive home on what you are good at! Granted there may be some mediocure applicants making to great schools each year, but being excellent will give you more chance.

I got into exeter too. If you want to know more about my stats and stuff you can PM me.

I’m also going to Exeter next year. I’ll answer any questions concerning stats as well.

Ah, DiveAlive, thank you for that. You’re right about the sport prodigy part. Sports and i just don’t go well together.

Hershey is right, SSAT scores are not everything, so don’t worry about it too much. I was in the same position a few months ago - so worried about my SSAT scores, thinking that it will greatly affect my application. But then I met current students who said that it doesn’t really affect your application that much. I did terribly on the vocabulary part of the test and hey, I still made it! :)

@ proudmom
If you go to the CTY website, they have this program where you can enter your test scores and they will give you some options for summer classes. :]

My hook, mhm, I’m not really sure. I’m not a music star, and certainly not a sports star. I do well in school, but that’s only because my school doesn’t have a very strict program. My interviewer said she liked my “independence”, so I guess that’s one. And oh, teacher recommendations :)

wait do u think a 2281 is good enough for Phillips Andover or Exeter

I got a 95% for ssats i have a’s/b’s, i am top 10 in New Jeresy for Tennis and top 50 for middle states. I also am in mathcounts and play a few instruments. Do I have a good chance to get into schools like exeter, andover, groton, etc…???

dgl123, PM me. You have a great shot at Hotchkiss I believe. They consistently have one of, if not the best prep school tennis teams for both boys and girls tennis. I would highly recommend the school to you. You would od great hear academically as well as the fact that you could excel at your favorite sport. One of my friends is going to play tennis for Harvard next year.

dgl, PM me. I think Andover would be a great fit for you! We have a terrific tennis team and a dynamic music program. You don’t want to go to Hotchkiss. I didn’t get any phone service when I was there for revisit day ;).

I took the Princeton Review practice test for the SSAT. Here are my scores:

Math: 775, about 92%
Verbal: 750, about 90%
Reading: 720, about 91%
Overall: 2245, about 93%

Would these scores be enough to get me into Lawrenceville?
