I don’t usually give any direct advice on chance threads but I would ED Cornell in your case. They have great programs in what your looking at and seeing as that you’re a bit of a reach as a regular applicant, I have a feeling that you’ll get in with the early advantage.

Your SAT’s are weak. Your SAT II’s are ok, but nothing special amongst other competitors. And you’re an Asian from NJ, which does not help whatsoever (it’s an incredibly competitive pool). you need to work on your extracurriculars too.

Comparing you to some students from my school who are applying to similar schools across the river in NY:
University of Pennsylvania (Gonna be a no)

 • Cornell University (maybe - leaning on no, you need to raise your sat)
 • Washington University in St. Louis (more likely no than yes)
 • Johns Hopkins (maybe - leaning on no, same issue as cornell)
 • University of Virginia (perhaps)
 • Carnegie Mellon (perhaps)
 • University of Michigan (more likely than not)
 • University of Rochester (I’d say solid chance)
 • Rutgers University (Yep)

University of Pennsylvania - Reach

Cornell University - Low Reach

Washington University in St. Louis - Reach

Johns Hopkins - Low Reach (I know kids who’ve gotten in w/much lower stats)

University of Virginia - Low Reach/High Match (Extremely competitive since your OOS, but you’ve got the stats)

Carnegie Mellon - Low Reach/High Match (Leaning more towards High Match)

University of Michigan - Reach

University of Rochester - IDK

Rutgers University - SAFETY

University of Pennsylvania: no dice for wharton. nothing in your profile is sharp enough.

Cornell University: reach. cornell isn’t as inclusive as it once was.

Washington University in St. Louis: match for ED. reach RD.

Johns Hopkins: match ED. reach RD.

University of Virginia: high match

Carnegie Mellon: low reach

University of Michigan: Low match

University of Rochester: safety

Rutgers University: safety

Your top few schools are certainly reaches… Especially for Penn, your SAT score is low. And the fact that you’re not in the top 10% of your class will definitely affect your chances as well.

JHU is not a match for you. It is, at best, a high match.

You’re a karate instructor, that’s sweet!!! Hahaha, AND your school has Varsity Chess. Awesome.

 • University of Pennsylvania - High Reach, I hate telling people that, but your EC’s aren’t strong enough
 • Cornell University - Reach.
 • Washington University in St. Louis - Reach… but it helps that you’ve worked a lot
 • Johns Hopkins - Low Reach/High Match
 • University of Virginia - High Match/Match
 • Carnegie Mellon - Match
 • University of Michigan - Match
 • University of Rochester - Match
 • Rutgers University - Safety

Your first line of competition is your own classmates and then those from similar NJ schools. That will make Penn tough with rank (Penn will know where you rank) and current scores.

If you guys want me to chance back, please leave a link.

UPenn- Reach, Apply E/D if clearly your first choice
Cornell- Low Reach
WashU- Low Reach
Cornell-Low Reach
UVA- High Match
Carn Mellon- High Match
The rest you should be in.

You have all around good stats. The only thing I can see improvement is your SAT I’s… Try to get them 2200+ if you have time in the fall.

bump please?

Can i get a 2nd bump?

University of Pennsylvania - This is reach, apply ED if you can

Cornell University - reach

Washington University in St. Louis - low reach

Johns Hopkins - high match

University of Virginia - dunno

Carnegie Mellon - match

University of Michigan - low match

University of Rochester -safety

Rutgers University - safety

chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/769425-oh-my-god-im-senior-chance-me-computer-science-schools.html

University of Pennsylvania - high reach either way (ED or RD)

Cornell University - reach - high reach RD… Reach ED

Washington University in St. Louis - Low Reach

Johns Hopkins - low reach

University of Virginia -low match

Carnegie Mellon - low reach

University of Michigan - low reach

University of Rochester - safety

Rutgers University - safety
Well that’s from experience. I know way too many people rejected from Cornell with 4.9 GPA and 2200-2350 SAT… with great EC. But then I always know that there are the few people out there that can write a meaningful essay that will look great. Also depends on luck… some admission officers might weight some things more heavily. Well good luck. Chance me? I like never get replies haha.
