Hi guys..
I just got back my SAT I scores and they are way below what I had expected
I guess I just can't take those god forsaken timed standardized tests. I mean I'm sure im not stupid- Its abnormal that I have a 7 in IB math HL and a predicted 7 as well yet get such a nauseatingly low sat I Math score- I don't gett itt!!
any who ( im over it now).. I already sent in my application to Yale as SCEA so im not going to be retaking the sats anymore. I was just wondering if you think I should take the toefl ( even though I don't HAVE to) so that it would kind of distract the ad coms from my CR score. You think that could be the case or is it just a waste of a good $140.

it's a waste. really. TOEFL weight is like...get a 250 and above and we wont care anymore.

Depends if Yale exempts int'ls from taking the TOEFL if their CR is above a certain score.
Also depends how they judge whether someone is a native English speaker. Does four years or so of English medium schooling and IB English A1 count to them as native speaker?

But if you'd be judge as a native speaker of English even as an intel nationally, I'd say the TOEFL is a waste. You can buy a lot of books for $140 instead. :)

well Yale ( as do all of the other schools im applying to) says you don't need to take the toefl if you attend a school where the primary language of instruction is English and has been english for more than four years. Some other schools say that they will substitute the toefl for an eng. A1 predicted score.
still though, don't you think if I get a really high toefl (280-290) they won't pay as much attention to my low CR

not really...they only want to see you got a 250+ on the Toefl....that's what matters to them... :(

try to retake the SAT again, or try ur hands on ACT

Moreover, Universities not only look at our SAT score.... Highest priority is given to the High School Record.

check out http://collegeapps.about.com/od/yourhighschoolresume/a/topten.htm

I would have liked to try the act.. but its not offered over here. Moreover, I don't think I'll take the sat again. The only time I could take it again would be in december. That's the worst time as most of the IB internal assesments are due by then.
Do most collges accept January scores for RD? This way if I don't get into yale scea, or get deffered I can have all christams to study for the sats and then do them in January...
what do u guys think?

I think that's individual college policy regarding Jan SAT's. I do know Columbia Uni doesn't accept SAT's after December...Most probably those with early Jan deadlines don't take Jan SAT's...when are they again? Mid Jan, right?

And yes, Nov/Dec is hell for IB students. GRRRR. History IA, EE, 2nd lang. orals, World Lit, math portfolios... SUCKS.

yeah, but there still are univ that DO accept the Jan test...you should better check that out with each school and then decide if it's worth retaking.:)

ya that's exactly what I mean.. if i decide to take the SAT' in december Im gonna get soooo &@!#& over with all the IA's not to metion the ee and tok essay. we have so much that I have been putting to the side because of college applications etc.. that I don't think it would b worth it.
anyways I donno ill think about it a bit more.. thank you so much for ur help!

IB_Victim,

Write to the college telling them about your English background (number of years and level taken at high school) and do mention the financial factor. I got away without taking the TOEFL - just make sure you let the college know about it. And hey, if you strongly feel that another attempt at the SATs wont make a good difference, then forget it. Go work on other parts of your app - most importantly, your essays.

Goodluck!
