I Really Want to Get Into NYU

So Nyu is like my dream school. I am confident I will get in if I apply ED, but If I get in that way I doubt I will get good financial aid, and my family can’t afford around 300k for 4 years

My Gpa is around a 3.55 (I dont know if I can round to a 3.6)

My SAT is an 1850 -
Math - 630
CR - 610
W - 610
10/12 on essay

I still have to take the ACT and my subject SATs. I will later update.

I am currently a junior and have taken
AP Psychology
AP Biology
AP US History

I will get my AP scores around July and will update that too.

Next Year (Senior Year) I Plan to take

AP US Government and Politics
AP Spanish
AP Statistics
AP Environmental Science (Possibly)

I want to apply to CAS (is there any chance I could get into GSP at least?)

Other things about me:

Spanish Honor Society (treasurer)
Music Honor Society (I’m VP)
I’m a Girl Scout and plan to get my Gold Award (It’s like the Boy Scout Eagle)
I’m very involved in and win a lot of prizes in my school’s debate team
I also do forensics (It’s like competative acting and public speaking)

I have been dancing for more than 10 years and plan to get a diploma certifying me to teach dance

I also plan to do an internship/ gain some work experience this summer

I have 100 volunteer hours working with children

Assuming that my reccomendation letters are excellent, my application essay is awesome, I take early action in application, have visited the school for a campus tour, and in the future attend an open house and/or shadow a student there, what are my chances of getting in?

If I’m not good enough, what can I do to higher my chances? I am taking the SAT one last time the October of my senior year and hope to raise my score (lets say I have at least a 1900)

Anything you know that would help, please tell me!

If your GPA is unweighted then it is about average or slightly below average for CAS. IF it is weighted, then it is very far from average.I would try to get as close to 2000 as you can an then you will have a good shot.

My Gpa is weighted. I will work towards my SAT, thank you so much!

Right now with that SAT, I believe you would be denied. Their 25-75% range is 1890-2190. Your GPA is also too low. I’m looking at some data at colleges.niche.com for NYU, and a 25% student has a 3.54 GPA with a 2080 SAT, so even if you got that SAT score up to 2080, you would still be right on just a 25 percentile. USUALLY those at that level and below have a major hook…athlete, an amazing EC, etc. I think NYU is a very high reach for you, and my advice is to find another school to love. I think your confidence of getting in even ED is unfounded.

Thank you for your honesty

Also I would be applying as first generation

It’s a reach for you, although not an impossible one. NYU’s data set isn’t altogether meaningful when it comes to chances for a particular division. Test scores (especially Math) at NYU Poly and Stern are significantly higher than those for CAS. Tisch and Gallatin students may score higher on Reading and Writing. You aren’t likely to receive Merit Aid at NYU, however, and they do not guarantee meeting full need. If you are attracted to them, I suggest applying to Pitt, Temple, and DePaul. They are likelier to accept you, and they are all more affordable. All three are situated within vibrant, large cities.

I’ll try :frowning: thank you for the suggestions!

@cloudyskies

There are no such things as dream schools, only your dreams. Approach schools objectively based on what you want to do, what is attainable in terms of acceptance and what is logical financially.

The fact that you can teach dance and like to debate would be picked up by a smaller school in a close acceptance call, not NYU.

A school like Lafayette or Muhlenberg or Manhattan College sounds more like you.
