I totally don't get it

I didn’t apply to Davis, but it seems like a nice school. However, admissions-wise…

They rejected one guy from our school who was in the top 4% of the class (ELC) with an IB diploma on a varsity sports team…

and accepted guys who have failed classes, gotten Ds, are also in the IB program, do no sports, and have won a couple medals on regional level for Academic competitions.

I’m just so confoozled.

Applicants with good numbers don't always have the essays and are sometimes don't have the social abilities or are not involved enough in their community. This seems to be a very common case.

Don't forget about what major he applied to. I got into Davis for pych, but my friend who had better stats than I did didn't get in because she applied for biomedical engineering

very true - I had a pretty low gpa (3.4) with fairly desent test scores (1930 SAT and 30 ACT) and got into Comp Sci major - ive seen peopel with very similar stats get rejected from competative majors.

Life is unfair, live with it :) Btw is Applied Math competitive field or not?

i understand how you feel. although UC admissions have trends that are consistent, there are many ridiculous acceptances/rejections that occur every year. there is also a huge corruption factor in the entire admissions process (mostly in the lying students :]). anyway, get into a college and reach for your goals! do what it takes for education!

Applied math is not an impacted major so it isn't competitive to get admitted. As a major it's similar to the pure math major but the consensus seems to be that it's slightly easier(I'm a pure math major who might go to grad school in applied math).
