The letter opened with, "I am sorry to inform you that it is not possible to offer you admission for the upcoming academic year." And it made no mention of my being deferred or put on the waitlist.

The school is Lafayette. The deadline for all applicants is 1/1, and the deadline for switching to early decision is 2/15. They didn't receive my transcript and early decision agreement form until around 2/5, and they sent my rejection letter 2/13.

So here are my three questions:

1) Does Lafayette defer any of its early decision applicants?
2) Would they have told me in the rejection letter if I was deferred or will eventually be put on the waitlist?
3) Does not being deferred/waitlisted indicate that you're a very very sub-par applicant?

Sounds like a quick call to Lafayette will answer your questions. However, with no mention of waitlist or re-evaluation, I'd say it's very likely that you were rejected. Good luck nonetheless.

Alright, well I emailed Lafayette (not sure they'd care to spend time on the phone with a rejected applicant).

...But, my other question, if I was not deferred or waitlisted, is this a strong indication that Lafayette felt I was a very bad applicant (relative to their applicants)?

"Lafayette felt I was a very bad applicant (relative to their applicants)"

Don't judge yourself too harshly. The fact is there is limited space and for some reason, you didn't fit their profile. You should look at it as Oh well. It wasn't meant to be -- not some condemnation about you as a whole.

You have four great years ahead of you. Buckle down and enjoy what's coming, not "what might have been"

On another thread, I see the OP posted the below info. Based on it, I strongly suggest that the OP make sure that he has some safeties and real match schools. All or virtually all of the schools on this list look like reach schools to me just like Lafayette was.

"I have between a 2.90-3.10 gpa (long story why I'm not sure) and 2030 SAT. I applied to:

Wake Forest
St Olaf
Rhodes
Sewanee
Furman
Illinois Wesleyan"

lllkll, I'm glad you were already accepted by Hendrix but Northstarmom's advice was solid. It is very hard to predict admissions when your gpa and testing are disparate. I think your rejection from Lafayette means that they were not willing to overlook your gpa even in light of your strong SATs (and whatever other strengths are in your application). And I would assume it means that Hendrix was willing to overlook it. To be very honest, I think your gpa is below what Lafayette wants in its freshman class but your SAT is strong. So what you're finding out is how much the different schools value that gpa in light of SAT.

I thought my GPA would be > 3.36, but long story about that...

Anyways, yes, I think you're right about Lafayette. The scary thing about Hendrix is that my acceptance doesn't mean much. They accept around 80% of their applicants (Hendrix is somewhat self-selecting, but still)...plus two of my aunts went there...

Hendrix is a good school, but it's really easy to get into.

I'm just hoping St Olaf will take me to add to diversity or I'll slip into Illinois Wesleyan.

...I'm fine with Hendrix if all else fails though.

1) are you URM?
2) private or public?
3) class rank approximation?
4)FA? (I think Lafayette is need aware)
5) has anyone from your HS ever been accepted to Lafayette? your other schools?

FWIW, I think if you approach Lafayette from the perspective of the remainder of your list, they MAY be more apt to assist you.....

"But, my other question, if I was not deferred or waitlisted, is this a strong indication that Lafayette felt I was a very bad applicant (relative to their applicants)?"

Some colleges just have policies that if you are rejected ED, that's it -- no more chances. Don't take it as a personal referendum on yourself.

OP--if you want to know why Lafayette did not accept you so that you can take quick steps to improve your application at other schools, I strongly suggest that you ask your GC to call them and ask. You may be able to offer additional materials that with strengthen your application where it is weak, for example. If you just want to know out of curiosity, well, I doubt your GC will want to call. YOU can ask them, though.

Scary? The Exorcist was scary, Hendrix is not scary. So they accepted you, but it doesn't count? Sounds like you need an ego boost, so here goes:

You applied to some great schools. Some you'll get into, others you won't. It's not a personal statement about your worth if you're rejected; it could, in fact, be nothing more than a crap shoot, or just "one of those things". Maybe you're a wonderful artist, but alas, they're looking for a wonderful scientist to fill out their freshman class.

Be happy for the schools that want you (and you obviously want them back by virtue of your application submission). This is called a win-win situation, and you should feel very good about it.

"Scary? The Exorcist was scary, Hendrix is not scary. So they accepted you, but it doesn't count?"

lol...let me explain. Getting accepted by Hendrix in and of itself is not scary, but the fact that I was accepted by Hendrix does not relieve any of my fear of getting rejected by my 'reach' schools (and they are, I am quite certain at this point, reaches), because, as I said, getting accepted by Hendrix is meaningless insofar as its indication of my strength as an applicant.

3) class rank approximation?
4)FA? (I think Lafayette is need aware)

No
Public
25-35% (600)
Yes
My HS usually sends a few kids to Ivies and other top 20 schools every year.

Also, I'm from Arkansas. Go diversity! ...although it didn't seem to work with Lafayette.

yea, I see what you mean....but do know that being from an under-represented state to Lafayette may not trump the GPA and rank, even for ED. And maybe someone else can address the FA situation, but I think they are need aware....

"I have between a 2.90-3.10 gpa (long story why I'm not sure) and 2030 SAT. ....Also, I'm from Arkansas. Go diversity! ...although it didn't seem to work with Lafayette."

Your grades and scores were far below Lafayette's average. Diversity factors including being from an underrepresented state can awake the living, but they can't raise the dead.

^ Plus, like said above - they are need aware. Not only are your stats underwhelming, but you need FA. With the economic downturn, I doubt any private need-aware school is really wanting to take a chance on a so-so applicant.
