I will turn down Harvard for ______________.

^^ I wish all the Harvard/Stanford CC elitists thought the way you do.

^^ as if CC doesn't have Yale elitists with the same mindset... and Princeton, and MIT, and more...

Sorry for the digression, but holy crap, kyledavid! Over 7000 posts?!? Do you live on CC?

I don't know, I have yet to see one. (If you say PosterX, he hasn't posted for months.)

yayyul, just barely

lol How did this thread get 21 pages long? The way I see it there really is no reason to turn down Harvard except if you are dead set on engineering/comp sci or another field that h may not be the best for.

Things change once you receive an actual acceptance letter with generous aid and the like.

This is seriously true.

As someone who actually did choose not to go to harvard, i can say that one big thing for me was the college's atmosphere. My friends at harvard tell me that it's a very competitive campus, and not as social as its peer colleges. I chose another college with a smaller department for my major because i felt that i could live a more balanced life there.

College is supposed to be a great four years... and some of the alums i know (one of whom went to both harvard and the university i'm currently attending) recommended that i not buy into the hype because their experience wasn't that great, even if the academics were.

Kwijiborjt,

It's a shame that your friend had a bad experience at Harvard. But, this is only their experience. My son has friends who attend Yale and my cousin attended Cornell. They had the same experience that your friend had a Harvard. So you see, this can be found at any college, not just H. We know of someone who attends Reed in Oregon and they feel the same pressure and stress from the students. College is what you make of it and who you pick as friends. I hope you are happy at the college of your choice, but remember that it's not an automatic that you will be free from a competitive atmosphere because it's not H.

a klondike bar

First, my advice to anyone who is competition-phobic: man up. Second, I don't see why there would be need for even semi-competitiveness except maybe amongst pre-meds. Third, there's no need for a social campus when you're in the heart of a social city.

Just my $0.03

^ or pre-law or pre-business...

^GPA isn't as important for those two.

Just a fast poster, rather. I spend more time on some other forums (nerdier ones, if you can believe it ;)), on my 'computer time,' which is blissfully more frequent during the summer. :)

Oh, I've seen quite a few. I won't name names, but believe me, they come out from under their bridges sometimes.

Amen. People on CC especially whine about the "competitive" colleges like Harvard, JHU, Berkeley, etc. and more often than not, it's overblown.

I'm almost scared to ask this, but...what might those forums be?

Nothing . . . because nothing compares to telling other people "I go to Harvard"

MIT, Princeton, etc just aren't as well known, especially abroad.

LOL. I thought you'd say something about fantasy RPGs.

^You think he's a WoW addict? LMAO

^ Nah, not necessarily. There are plenty of other online RPGs. What I find even scarier are the role-playing forums.

lol, RPG forums are pretty scary. WoW fanatics especially so. (I have some friends who are WoW fiends, and I've seen how it eats away at their souls.)
