feel free to post here. i havnt gotten on for the past 3 months....just started college...busy...but now i have more time... i guess I'll be on here....

I graduated last year..class of '07. Loved my experience there, and certainly helped me in college. So any questions, shoot

yes it's about main biulding. Because all the school's major parts are housed in one large biulding, as opposed to several smaller ones, do you think the facilities could have been more tailored to each subject?
ex.
The music biulding is soundpoof and designed for great acoustics as opposed to the music room in the main biulding i next to the spanish classes.

bearcats is half bear half cat...no..it's the mascot of hotchkiss.. they call him bucky the bearcats...oh god i hate saying that name now...oh how i hate ohio state...those dam buckeyes...

anyway...no..that was the reason why they built the seperate science building and music building because those are equipment and space consuming subjects....i mean science is the only equipment intensive subject at high school level..
in main building, the computer lab, language labs and computers in the math class rooms take care of most of the needs of other subjects.
the music building is almost world class. but i dot understand what you mean by the music room next to the spanish classes...coz there isnt one. maybe you can clarify on that?

could you tell us about your stats??
because I am kinda (understatement) freaking out.
and how were the stats of other people at hotchkiss??
hahah kkay thanks :D

yeah, I'm also curious about your stats too...What were the stats of the average student at Hotchkiss, and what were the stats and # of AP's for students who go to Ivies etc? What college do you go to now, if you don't mind me asking?

What are the dorms like? I didn't get a chance to go up for a tour because I live so far away. If I get accepted as a junior, I've come to understand that I'll probably be assigned a single room? What are the rooms like? Space-wise? Are there sinks? Furniture? Closet size?

Good to see you here bearcats - could have used your good experiences the last few weeks on a couple of threads! Glad to hear college is going well.

Hi bearcats. If you were to do it all over again, I'm sure you'd choose Hotchkiss. Which school would be your second choice and why? What are the important qualities you'd look for in a school, knowing what you know now?

My child goes to Hotchkiss so I can answer a few of the questions. You will probably be in a single. The opening of school this year brought two new dorms, but for underclassmen. You will probably have a single but you could have a day student assigned to your room. In the summer, they send out a note asking about your dorm requests. If you want a single, just put it on the sheet. My child doesn't have a roommate or a day student. The room she is in is actually bigger than most kids have at home. It has a closet about the size any newer home would have, not the small closet that you would find in an older (50s) home. There is a dresser with a mirrored cabinet on top of it for toiletries that you don't take with you to the shower. There is a single bed and a very tall window. If you get a corner room, you will likely have two windows. There is not a sink in the room. The room is carpeted but most kids have an area rug. There is a desk in your room but most kids buy an office-style chair once they get there because the chair that comes with the desk is a standard chair.

As far as the stats, I think if you are not a recruited athlete, you can go with what is typically published for Hotchkiss as far as stats. Everyone she knows was a straight A/B student and without giving out too much I will say her SSAT was above 90, below 99 in all categories! From our experience, I would say being a smart, but well-rounded and friendly person means a lot at Hotchkiss. We did visit other schools and I felt like what helped my child make the decision about Hotchkiss was that the students were very friendly and welcoming and really wanted her to go there. There is no fakiness about it. It is not a problem to go as an upperclassman because although there are many well-established friendships, she has found that everyone welcomes you into their groups and encourages you to try new things. Of all the things she has been involved with in her life and the several schools she has gone to, going to Hotchkiss has been the best experience for all of us as a family. Sometimes she is really tired from doing so much, but I can't remember the last time we were on the phone that she was not laughing and happy and having friends popping into and out of her room. Does that help at all??

hpflrent, not trying to disagree, but for your first year as underclassmen, it is more likely for you to be placed in a double, but for the following years, it is almost certain that you'll get a single if you write single on the dorm request sheet.

lexima, I would definitely choose hotchkiss, my second choice would be either lawrenceville or choate. I liked the community thing about hotchkiss, unlike milton, which is 50% boarding, hotchkiss is kinda isolated so people dont desert the campus on weekends like other boarding schools. From my experience at hotchkiss, i think everyone should choose the school they feel most comfortable at, go visit. It's important.
alyria- more likely than not you'll be in a single. But there are more upperclass doubles for girls than guys. So who knows ?
lalalove and al, do you mean my stats applying to colleges or stats applying to boarding schools?
Al, I go to university of michigan's ross school of business now. Dont focus on the ivies, keep your options open. By the way I got into UPenn wharton but i felt most comfortable at U of M's business school when I visited. My college advisor was awesome. She guided me through the entire process, I dont regret a single bit choosing michigan over upenn.

Hi Bearcats, I was just at the school and with the new dorms there are very few doubles even for underclassmen, but of course I am basing that on what one of the dorm fac told me. I figured that having a current student tell me that and also an adult who actually lives in one of the dorms tell me that, I assumed it was correct. The other thing is, I was answering a poster who said she applied as a junior.

Hi bearcats, is there a big asian population in Hotchkiss? Do they seemed isolated from other people? BTW, do you know Michael Wu? Is he like taking over 15 APs at Hotchkiss or something?

Hi bearcats, thanks for the response. I'm not that focused on Ivies, but I just used that as an example to qualify the level of the students (I know it's very general, and I know there are exceptions, such as people like you who choose other schools over ivies). I'm more curious about your stats applying for college, since I applied to Hotchkiss this year to enter as a senior next fall (family emergency).

bestswimmer - The asian population at hotchkiss has grown in the past 2 years. I actually do not like the fact that most asians go together, especially koreans which is the case at every boarding school from what i heard. I never really hang out with "ASIANS" specifically I just hang out with people who live around me in the dorm. And yes, I know michael wu...he's crazy lol...he's really smart to...

al
I had a 3.2, 2280 SATs, but both UPenn and UMich used the old 1600 scale last year which is in my favor because i had a 1580...i sucked at writing..

bearcats, just a question about the asian population
are most of them international students from international schools or pretty much the 99th percentile SSAT 203480384 math/science competitions won etc etc type of students? I'm interested in Hotchkiss, but I'm not exactly the best student in my school.
And you mentioned the Koreans, do you know what schools they came from? If you can list any, I'd really appreciate it (I think some guesting Asians would too, from my past experience of lurking on the forums :D)

Bearcats if I Messaged you with my stats, or even posted them on here, could you tell me my chances of being accepted? I'm a freshman now Applying for junior year.
