If i want to take a nondegree course at Suny Empire++

Can i take a non degree course and use my SBU financial aid to pay for it? like be a visiting student for a semester or something? where do i go to find out more information about doing this???

Do you mean can you use money that SB refunded you to pay for it? If so, yes. But SB won’t give you any additional aid to pay for an outside course or even add it to your COA budget for the year. You can just register for the course directly with Empire.

One thing you might want to look into is whether SB has any cross-registration agreement with Empire. I know that UB does (as part of a whole consortium agreement), in which case the student does not actually have to pay for the class…but has to wait until right before the course begins to register and take the chance of there being no seat left. Any cross-reg agreements they have should be somewhere on the SB website or you could ask your advisor. If you’ll want the credits to transfer, you should check with your advisor for course articulation anyway.

Thanks for your reply.

To clarify, what i want to do is take 2 online courses at Empire and 0 courses at Stony Brook for the semester. But i dont want to matriculate to empire, so i was thinking if i could be a visiting student stony brook would just use my financial aid… I transferred to stony brook from UC system and this was possible there. Not sure if this would work here.

I’d contact both the Financial Aid office and the Transfer Office (both on the ground floor of the Admin Building) and work out the details. It’s doable, but you want to make sure you maintain your matriculation status here on campus.
