If I wasn't weight listed or deferred then ...What am I?

Good day, so I received an email about 4 months ago during early admissions saying that...

Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2013. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student's competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades.

What would you consider this to be? and what are the chances that University of Michigan accepts a student that receives this message?
I received a GPA of aprox. 3.8-3.9 first semester, do you think I could make it?

This means you were deferred. Its hard to know if you will get accepted or denied without more information, even then it is a crab shoot.

Also, make sure they got your first semester grades.

I don’t know but it may mean that you were ignored for not knowing how to spell “wait”. Seriously, you’ll be hearing if you were accepted or wait-listed by mid-April.

Thanks for the reply! haha I wasn’t sure what to make of this message. All my friends who got deferred received an email specifically saying “deferred.” But again, thanks~ I’m just going to have to hope for the best.

Haha. Thanks for the catch! You didn’t have to be so critical and snobby about it…but thanks for your reply. Yes I know they are sending out admissions by mid-April.

My apologies Adam; I just couldn’t resist. If the 3.8 - 3.9 was unweighted and had challenging classes, then yes, it will help. Best of luck and be patient.

Things are getting tough if you get weightlisted with an unwaited GPA of 3.8.

The 3.8 was just his last semester.

I don’t have that great of statistics…3.6 overall. I think U of M is mainly looking at my classes I have taken. I’ve taken 10 APs classes throughout high school which really stands out and all of my extracurricular activities I have participated in. And also my essay I thought touched on topics that made me stand out. Things are and will continue to get tough, but I believe there is hope. :)

“Crab shoot”

Haha haha

That means you were deferred from Early Action into the regular pool.

Not all of them will hear by mid-April. I know some applicants who were admitted on Feb 28 after being deferred from EA; and some in mid-March.

… Are February and March not “by mid-April”?

Besides, OP, already applied and was deferred. Considering time travel as of now isn’t a thing, it’s likely he won’t receive his decision one month ago. :)

Adam my daughter got the same email in December. Her counselors could not figure out her status because other applicants just got letters that said deferred. The counselors put a positive spin on the email and told her that they may actually be interested otherwise why would they ask for fall semester grades. Nevertheless, I hope this madness ends soon. Good Luck!!!
