If the dorms arn't working out... what are my options?

I was wondering about the people who lived in the dorms for part of the year, then realized they were not enjoying themselves because of room mates, privacy, whatever, what did they do (besides wait it out)?

Can you change rooms during the year?

Can you change room mates during the year?

Can you leave the dorms and look for another place to live (I assume there would be a fee charged for canceling your stay in the room)?

I'm not planning to do this, I am just curious what my options are.

Yes. You have to talk to your R/A and have a bit of a conference with your roommates. If you go through the process of trying to resolve things and find that issues are too strong or unbearable (for both or all parties) can you request a room change. I think you have to find other people who need to swap roommates too.

Yes, you can leave the dorms. You have to communicate with the Residential Director and fill out a sort of petition. You'll also have some fees with that process too.

I'll just add it has to be a pretty darn good reason to get a room change or out of your housing contract. It's not just a matter of you not liking your roommate. Resident directors are tough about this stuff.

Speaking from experience, go straight to the housing office and ask them what rooms are available, they will give you a form you need to get signed by the resident director. DON'T go to your RA, unless you want to sit with him/her as he/she asks you why you want to change and spend a very long time arguing that you want to switch while they keep suggesting that you just talk it out with your roommate.

You don't need to find people to switch with either, you just need to find a room that has a space. I don't remember fees though...?

Is the housing office the one near Deneve? (or each individual housing office?)

You mean ORL?

The housing office is located in sproul. ORL is a separate building next to sproul and you'd probably never have a reason to go there unless you are in ORL.

The ORL is the red building right?

The ORL is the red building right?

No, the red building is SUC. ORL is lightbrown? It is between the bottom of the Rieber stairs and Sproul, though not 100% in that location.

Depending on your RD they'll do nothing because it would mess up his personal vacation plans.

RDs are BUSY right now. The only time they'll let you switch is immediately after winter break, and that's if there's space. Oh, and if your roommate is seuxally harassing you or punching you in the face, you can also get an emergency transfer.

if you don't like your res hall, then I will gladly switch with you. I live in Hitch Suites, and I want to transfer to res halls. Suites are a lot more private and quiet, so you might prefer that lifestyle. Message me if you are interested in switching with me.*

I'm a transfer junior though and I would like to have other juniors around.....are there a lot of juniors in hitch?

Well, for a couple of years, Hitch was considered mostly transfer students and upperclassmen. There are for sure more upperclassmen here than the res halls.

Hitch is 70% freshmen this year. You think you have it bad? I was a freshmen in Hitch last year when it was only 30% freshmen. And yeah it was harder socially than a res hall or even a plaza. But this year you'll find hundreds of other freshmen in the same boat. Who knows, maybe Hitch will be social.
