I talked to my JC advisor this week. My UC IGETC is short two English classes. (F.Y.I I went to too many colleges to qualify for a TAG to a UC).

I took English ages and ages ago at an UC Extension campus before the current requirement for 6,000 words and critical thinking were stipulated.

The advisor says I need to take English 1 and Critical Thinking AGAIN before my UC IGETC can be met.

When I applied for UC campuses a few weeks ago I indicated that the UC IGETC was completed.

So my question is, if I took the GE English classes at a UC Extension way back when, will UC Admissions accept them for GE today ?

You should probably verify with admissions on this one, but my take is you will have to retake it.

For the courses to count, they would have to fulfill the current requirements OR if when you took the classes, they fulfilled current requirements at the time of enrollment.

Just because you took English doesn’t mean anything, but if those courses could be used to transfer to UC and were accepted for credit for the intro English classes, then you would NOT have to retake the classes.

Look up the UC catalog for the years you took those classes and see if they transfer. Doesn’t matter if it was 20 years ago. They met the requirements when you enrolled. That’s what matters. It’s like a grandfather clause.

I thought that that was the case too.

Yes when I took the two English classes those were the required classes for UC English GE requirement.

The JC’s IGETC certification people asked for copies of the catalog description of the classes from the exact year and I obtained it o.k.

They looked at it and said ‘6000 words and Critical Thinking are missing’ and that I have to take the two classes over again before they can certify the UC IGETC.

Did you point out the IGETC agreement in that years catalouge? If it’s written for the requirement to transfer, it will. I would challenge it.

My freshman year was in 1998 and I’m doing it too because my school was in Florida. Each time I have to sign up for a class I have to print out pages from the 1998 catalog and show the counselor that it counts dangit lol.

The JC’s IGETC evaluation person said this past semester that old requirements don’t matter to them. I was accepted to 4 UC campuses a few years back but because of work and family obligations I did not submit the SIR nor try to get the IGETC from my JC back then. The UC schools don’t want to evaluate IGETC because of budget cutbacks and want you to have it done by the JC. Also the JC won’t scehdule an evaluation of IGETC unless I am currently enrolled, which I am not planning to be this semester, but I may have to take some easy class or re-take English 1A & 1B to compete the IGETC and that’s why I’m asking people on this forum what I should do…
